Trailer Wiring Hookup/Harness. 2007 RSV

I could use advise from anyone who has wired up trailer lighting for there venture. I purchased an Aluma MCT motorcycle trailer that is wired with 5 pin. It is the standard motorcycle hook up with seperate brake/tail lights. I plan on installing the 5 pin female plug on the bike and tieing into the RSV wiring under the seat where the manufacturers plug is for the rear lights.

Is anyone aware of a plug and play type adaptor available that you can plug into the existing plug under the seat to avoid splicing/soldering into the existing wires?

Has anyone made up a bracket to attach the plug to the bike and if so where did you mount it? I thought about mounting it just to the left of the licence plate as it is up out of the dirt and water.

Will the existing lighting fuse handle the additional LED lights on the trailer with out any problems?

As always any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.

I just put a hitch on my bike which i got from MC hitch the only thing i can really tell you is watch the wireing the colors were wrong on my harness you would think it would be brown to brown.. not the case on mine and my trailer also has l.e.d. lights and the fuse handles it with no problem. i mounted my plug next to the place on the hitch where you put the saftey chains but my plug is flat so it fit real well there. and also use the rubber cap for the plug when your not using it to help keep the water and dirt out. I hope this helped a little. Ron

At the back of the RSV the colors are as follows:

Dark green is the right turn signal.

Dark brown is the left turn signal.

Blue is the tail light.

Yellow is the brake light.(Well yellow doesn't show up well but you get the picture)

Black is ground.

 

(You will need to change a wire here or there to get the proper lights to work but this will give you an idea as to what is where NOW and make the change easier. As you can see green is the only wire that is for the correct light "right turn").

US trailer wiring specs as follows:

4 way flat molded connectors allow basic hookup for three lighting functions; right turn signal / stop light (green), left turn signal / stop light (yellow), taillight / license / side marker (brown) and a ground (white).

 

5 Way Systems

 

Same as 4 way system listed above but adds a extra blue wire for brake signal or auxiliary power. Used on pop up camper trailers or utility / boat trailers.

 

 

 

6 Way System, Rectangle Plug

 

3/4 inch by 1 inch 6 way rectangle connectors right turn signal (green), left turn signal (yellow), taillight (brown), ground (white). The red and blue wire can be used for brake control or auxiliary. Use on a small motorcycle trailer, snowmobile trailer or utility trailer.

6 Way Systems, Round Plug

 

Round 1 1/4" diameter metal connector allows 1 or 2 additional wiring and lighting functions such as back up lights, auxiliary 12v power or electric brakes. Note: The black (sometimes red) 12v and blue electric brakes wire may need to be reversed to suit the trailer. Check with a test light or VOM. Uses: horse trailer, travel trailers, landscaping trailer, car trailer, etc.

 

 

7 Way Systems

 

Round 2" diameter connector allows additional pin for auxiliary 12 volt power or backup lights. Uses: heavy duty landscaping trailer, car trailer, boat trailers, horse trailer, travel trailer, construction trailer, etc. Check with a test light or VOM.

As for a plug and play harness, there are none that I know of. I've seen them for the Goldwing but not for the Venture. That would sure be nice.

I just intalled the 5 pin connector on my 05 RSTD and bought a kit from O'Reilly's auto parts for $10 (Hoppy #48345) that had the trailer end, the bike end and a mount for the bike end. Mounted it to the underside of my receiver hitch. Looks factory to me.

What about the wiring kits and isolator form MC Hitch. Not plug and play, but seems to provide everything you might need.

Thanks for posting the RSV wire colors. I used the information to wire up my trailer plug. It also helped me straighten out the mess the previous owner of the trailer had made of the trailer wiring. I'm ready to ride - and pull.
