vmax clutch basket

hi all

kbay as me a question about if you could use a vmax clutch basket in our rsv's? we have never heared of the "whine" issue in the vmax. anyone have ideas?

Don, I never hear a whine on my 1st Gen clutch assembly. It is a diaphragm clutch just like yours. So, why does a 2nd Gen whine and not a 1st Gen. Wanna take a weekend and pull clutches? Might be worthwhile to see what is different. It would only take a couple of gaskets and a few tools. Hardest part would be getting the clutch off the shaft.

 

Second thought- I do have a complete 1986 driveline in a bike on the back porch. I could remove the clutch assembly form that one for inspection purposes.

JB, I wouldn`t mind trying that, mine screams like a Banshee..... think I blew a speaker trying to drown the noise. It will even make the noise just setting and reving the motor. Sounds like a mini maint. Day to me.

Guys,

 

Yes a V-Max clutch basket will work in a RSV or RSTD (even any of the 1st gens). However like I have pointed out in the past, it depends on which basket (primary driven gear) you have in your bike now.

 

In fact I did this myself when I rebuilt my 93 and found that my Barnett fiber plates had been eaten up by the basket and destroyed it. But it wasn't a big thing because I had a V-Max bottom end laying there that I had taken the heads off and put on the 93. Since the basket looked good, I wend ahead and finished assembling it with the V-Max basket. And to my surprise when I took her out on the maiden voyage, I now had a loud chirper. Turns out that I had replaced a "G" basket with a "F".

 

I'll cut this story short and get to the point, where you really need to see which gear you have in your bike now. Just remove the basket and look at the alpha character hand etched on the back side of the gear. If you have an "F" gear, it most likely can be replaced and cured by a looser "G" gear.

hi all

thanks for all the replys. i myself never given the "whine" a thought. i had my rsv a couple of years before i joined the site. then foud out about the "whine". about a year ago i meet the wife of owner of the yahama dealer in kerrville at a gas station. we were talking about the ride we had done on the 3 sisters. she asked me had i noticed the "whine". i told her no but then i have bub's exhaust pipes on. and that i had not noticed it. i don't notice it like kbay does on his rsv at idle. kreg next time we meet up i'll let you drive my rsv to see if mine has it. yep i can see a mini mx day.
