Dave77459 Posted January 19, 2009 #1 Posted January 19, 2009 (edited) I changed my own oil for the first time yesterday, and today I have a backfire on the right pipe during deceleration. More, it has a surging kinda sound in the idle. It's a subtle hiccup every so often that wasn't there before. Is there something I could have done during the oil change to cause this? If I take it to the dealer, can I claim warranty service? Or, should I wait for the Maintenance Day on March 15? Edit: I was looking at photos after posting this, and saw that when I first started the bike, the right pipe has "smoke" while the left does not. Is this a clue? sarges46 Posted January 19, 2009 #2 Posted January 19, 2009 Cant see what changing the oil did anything. But it sure seems like something is not firing right or not at all. Try carefully placing hand on cylinders to see if they are all warm. Post and wait for further help. It might be something real easy.
GeorgeS Posted January 19, 2009 #3 Posted January 19, 2009 Did you Overfill with oil ??? Hold bike vertical, and recheck the sight gauge. Should be 1/2 way between the two marks. Just a thought
OutKast Posted January 19, 2009 #4 Posted January 19, 2009 If you filled to top of sight glass while the bibke was leaning on the side stand, that would do it. The bike must be sitting straight up and down when you check it, which is a PITA since 2nd gens do not have a centerstand. Just a little lean will be enough to change the reading. Fill it only to halfway between the marks. Filling it top the top mark sometimes causes leakage at the driveshaft seal.
Dave77459 Posted January 19, 2009 Author #5 Posted January 19, 2009 It was sitting on a Carbon One lift adapter with legs, very level. I filled it based on the service manual quantities, and it was sighted to be just on the heavy side of halfway but no where near the top of the glass. Overfilling will cause a strange idle and backfiring on deceleration?
Dave77459 Posted January 19, 2009 Author #6 Posted January 19, 2009 Oh, and it seems possible that the smoke is from an oil drip during filling. That side is where the oil filler is, and a drop or two could have hit the pipes.
