Guest OldDog Posted March 2, 2009 #26 Posted March 2, 2009 My daughter and son-in-law have lived in Myrtle Beach or Little River for 9 years now. They are quite upset about the new ordinances, as are other locals. Here is the post they entered in Facebook, where they created the group "Bikers Boycott City of Myrtle Beach". They want everyone to know that, with a little effort on the bikers' part, the current mayor and councilmen may negate their ordinances, or be "un-elected", allowing the next set of councilmen to reverse these ordinances. "Motorcyclist Enthusiasts - Residents & Tourists Alike! It's a shame that bikers as a whole have to suffer because of a few immature idiots. Everybody knows "who" is to blame for their acts of stupidity during all of the bike weeks -- it should be those people who have to pay for their mistakes, not all of us. But we all know that this is not how government works anymore! Instead, all resident and tourist motorcyclists must now wear helmets and be concerned about their decibel levels 52 weeks per year when visiting the city of Myrtle Beach. We think that an idea circulating on other motorcycle websites will work, but it will take everybody getting involved and then sticking to the plan wholeheartedly. We are proposing a YEAR-ROUND boycott on the restaurants, stores, and all businesses within the city limits of Myrtle Beach ONLY. Ride up and down their streets if your pipes are legal, but other than that, do not stay in, eat at, or buy anything within the city limits. This may be a little inconvenient for us, but there's still plenty of other places to frequent just outside the city limits. We believe that when the Myrtle Beach business owners go home empty-handed week after week that THEY will demand that the City Council rethink their new rules and regulations. If you agree, join us in our boycott!" They also note that the City of North Myrtle Beach has highly publicized its support of motorcyclists in a recent email and media campaign, and that vendors are welcome there too. Horry County Council has revised how many and where vendors can set up in a compromise with residents, but not by curtailing motorcyclists' rights. All of us think that their actions should be commended and supported. That is why we encourage every one to still come to Myrtle Beach, either during Bike Week or for your normally scheduled vacation, and support the boycott outlined above. And if you're a member of Facebook, please join their group!
BuckShot Posted March 2, 2009 #27 Posted March 2, 2009 It's a sad fact any way you look at it. Don't know all the problems of the bike weeks at MB but they had to have their reasons. We may not agree with them, but even if we boycot MB it won't hurt them in the long run. And that is a sad fact for us if we stay away. I remember all the hunters and shooters boycoting Wallmart because they quit selling some amunition after Colinbine. Just because some of the amunition used in those shootings came from Walmart, Walmart decided to quit selling it. Didn't hurt their business at all anywhere that I can recall,or can see. The one thing that does bug me is the fact that they are implementing a helmet law inside the city limits when the rest of the state doe's not have one. Now don't get me wrong, I wear a helmet 99% of the time, but I believe its the riders choice, exspecially in a state that says it is your choice.
Guest Swifty Posted March 2, 2009 #28 Posted March 2, 2009 Made a few trips to Myrtle Beach during my teenage years for March Beak. I read all the new ordinances...sounds like a place I'd like to visit...again...on bike. Surely, if you were a resident, business owner, you'd like the new ordinances too.
Dano Posted March 2, 2009 #29 Posted March 2, 2009 My daughter and her friends (she's 21) are heading down there to Sands Resort for Spring Break next weekend. I emailed her the new regs so she can be informed (what 21 yr old college student doesn't like to party?!). Even tho she won't be on a bike, she could still run afoul of the law if she's in MB. Don't know exactly where Sands is in regards to MB, but if you know the rules, it oughta help! Anything else she should know? Thanks guys, Dan
starman Posted March 2, 2009 #30 Posted March 2, 2009 There isn't going to be a bike week anymore in Myrtle Beach. Bike week as usual ,just not in mb,all around MB .North Myrtle welcomes bikers. Not a dime in 09 in Murtle Beach.Ihis is in city of MB only. Notsurrounding area.
mm482 Posted March 3, 2009 #31 Posted March 3, 2009 The site below has more details about the May 14 - 15 Rally. http://www.chdda.com/events/beachrally.html Earl
ToRide1 Posted March 3, 2009 #32 Posted March 3, 2009 So would anybody know what's going to happen with Bike week number #2 ?. As its a problem child that Central Myrtle Beach had to deal with and not be viewed as raciest with doing so. I have two step brothers that live there and they are business merchants in the central myrtle beach and they both told me it got way out of control last past year.
autopilot Posted March 3, 2009 #33 Posted March 3, 2009 It looks like the black bikefest in Atlantic Beach may be history, after all! AB city council succumbed to pressure from MB and offers of financial help from surrounding municipalities (they really have some major money problems in AB) and agreed to kill their rally as a condition of getting the assistance. I got the impression that they don't necessarily like it, but felt it was the only way to try to save the town. (They went in the hole bigtime on their rally....the town is just not big enough to support that big of an event and consequently, they couldn't collect enough in fees, etc. to make it work.) Regarding mm482's post (actually the page the link is for)....The Harley-Davidson Dealers Association did originate the MB rally, but they haven't been involved in any significant way for years. I agree with MB H-D when they say IT IS DISINGENUOUS FOR THE H-D DEALERS ASSOCIATION TO CLAIM THE RALLY MYRTLE BEACH IS OVER BECAUSE THEY'RE GOING TO NEW BERN, NC. MB Harley-Davidson has been the power behind the rally and is going to continue with plans for the rally! There won't be as many vendors this year, partly because of the hooplah and partly because of the economy and most of those vendors will be setting up outside of MB city limits. I think that will change when the dust settles and the economy turns the corner. It probably will never again be as big as it was, but I don't see it going the way of the conastoga, either. Truth be known, a smaller, saner rally just might be what the Doctor ordered.
SaltyDawg Posted March 3, 2009 #34 Posted March 3, 2009 The site below has more details about the May 14 - 15 Rally. http://www.chdda.com/events/beachrally.html Earl Yeah I just heard this morning on the local news about them moving to New Bern, NC. Makes my day since we live about 12 miles from the fair grounds where they are going to have the rally. I sure hope it works out for NB because it will bring a lot of money into the area. And the residents are looking forward to the influx of money. Not bad timing either since the Outer Banks Bike Week will be going three weeks prior to this one. We haven't been to that one, but just might this year since the Carolina Harley Rally is moving up the street from us. http://www.motorcyclemonster.com/events/Outer-Banks-Bike-Week--2009-04-23-Harbinger-NC.html
