YamaDuck Posted January 15, 2009 #1 Posted January 15, 2009 I purchased a used RSV which has a Clearview windshield installed. It has two or three round distortions in the windshield one of which is very close to my field of view. Does anyone else have these little round distortions in there Clearview windshields? I emailed Clearview about this issue and they have chosen not to reply to me. My Clearview windshield also has a terrible reflection off the gas cap that is very annoying. I can't see paying as much for a windshield as Clearview wants for that quality of windshield and such bad customer service. I'm looking at a Show Chrome tinted short windshield so I can look over it. For $81 it seems like a great buy. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/icon_cry.gif Harry
Sleeperhawk Posted January 15, 2009 #2 Posted January 15, 2009 Even with the OEM windshield, I have the gas cap reflecting, so I got the leather cover for the gas cap and no more reflection. Do a search for Clearview on the site, there was another thread about things reflecting on the Clearview shield.
YamaDuck Posted January 15, 2009 Author #3 Posted January 15, 2009 Alright I will. I have a 2000 MM with the light brown or tan seats. I'm not sure what color you call it. Do you know if they make a cover to cover the RSV 2000 MM gas cap that matches? Do you know who sells the gas covers?
OutKast Posted January 15, 2009 #4 Posted January 15, 2009 I have the short/wide showchrome shield and I have the gascap reflection bad, mostly late fall thru early spring. Lower sun angle i guess. Get bad reflection off the top off my white dash sometimes when oncoming cars hit it just right. Mine is not tinted. Try cleaning the shield with furniture polish (pledge) and see if the distortions clean off. Probably from being cleaned with an incorrect product in the first place, or someone used Rain-X, a big no-no on plastic shields.
YamaDuck Posted January 15, 2009 Author #5 Posted January 15, 2009 Ok I'll try but it looks like someone held a cigarette real close as just as the plastic started to distort pulled the cigarette away. I know that is not what happened but that is what it looks like. Harry http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/vnet_mm.gif

OB-1 Posted January 15, 2009 #7 Posted January 15, 2009 I put the XXL Clearview windshield on my bike last year and my wife and I love it. There's no distortion in the windshield, but I did have a significant reflection off the gas cap. My wife fixed that with a bit of elastic and a piece of black cloth. She made a simple cover for the gas cap. This windshield provides much better protection for both of us than the stock windshield and is much easier to look through at night or in the rain.

Harry http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/vnet_mm.gif I did that a quite few years ago to the windshield on my 82 Honda cb750 but it wasnt a cigarette; it was the overhead worklight in the garage was hanging down and slightly warped the windshield in 3 or 4 places before I realized what was happening....it made it really strange to drive in bright light or at night. davecb Posted January 15, 2009 #9 Posted January 15, 2009 Clearview sells "seconds" which may have flaws in them, This may be what you have on your bke...
YamaDuck Posted January 15, 2009 Author #10 Posted January 15, 2009 Thanks, That explains it. I emailed Clearview and asked if they sold seconds and I thought that I may have one but they never replied to let me know they sell seconds.
Leland Posted January 15, 2009 #11 Posted January 15, 2009 Thanks, That explains it. I emailed Clearview and asked if they sold seconds and I thought that I may have one but they never replied to let me know they sell seconds. Never is a long time. I just bought a Clearview and they called to tell me that they forgot to ship the lowers before I even had the box opened. Of course they sent them right out. I have attached Clearview's maintenance instructions.
YamaDuck Posted January 16, 2009 Author #12 Posted January 16, 2009 Thanks for the link. Since I bought the RSV used it did not have any instructions with the Clearview. I read the instructions and it said to presoak the windshield for at least 5 minutes and keep the presoak towel separate and only use the towel for presoaking and not use the towel for any other maintanence step but it does not state how often you need to soak the windshield. Does anyone know how often you need to soak the windshield?
friesman Posted January 16, 2009 #13 Posted January 16, 2009 Thanks, That explains it. I emailed Clearview and asked if they sold seconds and I thought that I may have one but they never replied to let me know they sell seconds. I would think its more likely the previous owner did something to cause the spots on your windshield. I was watching the Clearview site for a blemished one as I didnt want to pay full price, and anything I saw come up for sale as a blemish was just a small scratch along the top or edge. I was told that they wouldnt release anything interfering with line of vision, it would be destroyed rather than be sold. I have since bought a new Clearview (paid full price as no XXL ever came around while I was waiting) and the center vent was crooked. I sent a note and had a response back within hours and they paid for shipping both ways to fix the issue. I would recommend them to anyone. Oh yeah, i just soak mine whenever I gotta get the bugs off rather than scrubbing them off. Brian
YamaDuck Posted January 16, 2009 Author #14 Posted January 16, 2009 So your saying the reason for the soaking is to soften the bugs for cleaning and not part of the maintenance program to keep the windshield from drying out and getting brittle?
OB-1 Posted January 16, 2009 #15 Posted January 16, 2009 So your saying the reason for the soaking is to soften the bugs for cleaning and not part of the maintenance program to keep the windshield from drying out and getting brittle? The soaking is to remove the bugs, nothing else. You'll be amazed how easy it is to clean the windshield when you soak it with a wet towel for a few minutes. The whole idea is to keep from scrubbing and thus scratching the windshield. You can use rain-x on the windshield if you want, won't hurt a thing.
seabeetom Posted September 8, 2009 #16 Posted September 8, 2009 Alright I will. I have a 2000 MM with the light brown or tan seats. I'm not sure what color you call it. Do you know if they make a cover to cover the RSV 2000 MM gas cap that matches? Do you know who sells the gas covers? I would think that a tan colored gas cap cover would also reflect off the shield. I knocked the bottom out of a black can coozie and put it over the gas cap... voila', plus now I have a place to put little odds&ends.
hig4s Posted September 8, 2009 #17 Posted September 8, 2009 I bought a blemished XXL Clearview and I can't see any blemishes on it??
1BigDog Posted September 8, 2009 #18 Posted September 8, 2009 Duck, my Clearview shield has some distortion up top. Thats because of the slightly upturned lip for wind deflection. Maybe your shield isnt the right height for you? When I first got mine I sat right at the top line and I saw the distortion. As I lost weight and sat lower in the seat the distortion was less and less. Now its perfect. You just might need a taller shield, or a shorter one if thats your preference. Since the shield also angles back farther than stock you will get more reflection off of the gas cap. I have the leather cover on mine.
YamaDuck Posted September 9, 2009 Author #19 Posted September 9, 2009 I actually settled on a black coozie. I cut it so it just covered the gas cap. I then glued a round Venturers patch on it and even though it didn't match my Venture it did reduce the glare. There still was a little glare from some of the colors on the patch but much better than without the coozie. The only problem is when I was on the cross country ride last month someone wanted it more than I did so now I'm blinded by the glare again. As for the Clearview my problem isn't with the distortion but my windshield has little dots or circles that look like someone took a cigarette and held it real close but did not touch the windshield. I do not think anyone did this because the little dots are different sizes. Not very noticable but they are there. The biggest problem I have with the Clearview windshield is their sorry customer service. I went to their website and emailed them twice and they never responded. That is why I will never buy anything from their company or say anything positive about them. Harry

YamaDuck Posted September 9, 2009 Author #21 Posted September 9, 2009 No I didn't. I don't like to go through the process of transferring me from one person to another until I can find someone who will or can help me. Or listening to all the automated choices until I get to a real person. I could probably get an answer that way but I figure it would be a lot simpler just to shoot them an email. If they can't answer my emails then I will not call them. All they had to do was email me and tell me who to ask for and give them a call. I know I'm part of the problem and not the cure but I figure I don't need to make them happy, they need to keep me happy since I'm the customer.

flb_78 Posted September 9, 2009 #24 Posted September 9, 2009 I bought a blemished Clearview shield. It has a little dot just to the right of center. It bothered me for about 3 weeks, then I quit noticing it. I'd notice it once in a while and it looked like a rain drop. I now run the Yamaha short shield. LilBeaver has my shield now.
