FROG MAN Posted January 11, 2009 #1 Posted January 11, 2009 When I bought our ATV's in 04 I was going to buy a snow blade for mine.I decided to wait for a bad winter and after 4 years still waiting. Not that that is a bad thing but I was wondering. Do you have an Atv with snow blade accessory. If so what what did you buy? Tractor supply stocks a universal blade with mount but I'm sure there are others better.I need to get a winch to.
Freebird Posted January 11, 2009 #2 Posted January 11, 2009 Great question. I've been wondering the same thing. I really need to come up with something to plow my 400 foot drive. I bought a blade for my 23 HP Craftsman lawn tractor and it was a total waste of money. I do have a small electric winch that raises and lowers it but the tractor is apparently just not heavy enough. Even with wheel weights and chains it just doesn't have enough traction to plow though the snow. I've thought about a front mounted snowblower but the drive is gravel and I'm afraid a blower wouldn't work so well either.
FROG MAN Posted January 11, 2009 Author #3 Posted January 11, 2009 I use to plow the drive with a riding mower,tire chains, and a blade. That was no fun. After I bought the Atv's it quit snowing.
BEER30 Posted January 11, 2009 #4 Posted January 11, 2009 Don , Snow blower will work if you set the depth an inch or two above the grade . After a few snow falls the ice/snow will build up & pack and it will not be an issue . My brother has a blade on his ATV with a winch that raises the blade . His ATV is one of the larger 4x4 with chains and weights . He even has to place weights on the blade for down pressure . When I lived in AK , my blade was a manual lift lever style on my ATV 2 wheel drive with chains . I used it for the sidewalks as my truck did the driveways . BEER30

Freebird Posted January 11, 2009 #6 Posted January 11, 2009 NO...not a walk behind. I want one that mounts to the front of my lawn tractor or else buy a used lawn tractor with one already mounted. I actually look at one last week. It was a mid 90's Ariens with a two stage blower mounted and was complete with weights and chains for $750.00. Should have bought it I guess. It was in great shape. Even had a nice mowing deck with it that I really don't need.

cowpuc Posted January 12, 2009 #9 Posted January 12, 2009 Say Frogster,, I have owned a few and installed a number of them through the years.. Personally, I prefer the manual lift blade.. The winch style is ok but you do tax your electrical system and they are slow to activate.. Its a LOT faster job lifting the plow with a handle.. I have altered a number of handles over the years though to add leverage for some underpowered ladiemen... Cycle Country is the best known around here and they use a universal lift and blade with different mount kits for each atv.. Tuff blades for what they are too!! I also have a 10 horse 2 stage blower.. Honestly,, for moving deep snow, you cant beat a blower as it tosses the snow away instead of just piling it up.. Also, if you live in a windy area, remember that piled snow creates snow drifts that create bigger piles that create bigger drifts... Up in Gods country (U.P. of MI) the Road Commision uses truck mounted blowers for their serious business... I also use to have a nieghbor who had a 4x4 Kabota with a rear mount PTO driven blower - what a hoot to play with that bad boy!!! It could take out 4' of snow in seconds!! Big $ outfit (to me) but he did indeed just laugh in Mother Natures face.... Alas, I am becoming more and more interested in "snowbirding" every year... Marcarl Posted January 12, 2009 #10 Posted January 12, 2009 Used to have a front mounted blower on my 16hp tractor. Still got the tractor (last I looked) but sent the blower to the grave yard. I'd much sooner use the walk behind, 10hp \ 28" cut. It handles much easier, is more versatile in tight spots, blow things (all things) much further, and keeps me from freezing up just sitting there. Beats a blade anytime as it does not pile up the snow and create more drifts like a blade. Nope, wouldn't even trade it for the 45" ones that are on the market today. Sometimes you can get too big, too fancy and you just end up going backwards. Your drive Don would take about an hour, 2 round trips to the road and then the parking area, maybe not even that long, mine takes an hour with paths going out the back to the burning pit and sawdust bin.
6pak Posted January 12, 2009 #11 Posted January 12, 2009 I spent my whole 2nd decade of my life with an old cub cadet lawn tractor with a "40 blade on the front. If memory serves me, it worked pretty well back in the day. But I had a better idea, MOVE SOUTH!! Snow suddenly became a non-issue.
OB-1 Posted January 12, 2009 #12 Posted January 12, 2009 I've got a Polaris 700 with a winch operated 6' blade and use it to plow a little over a mile of gravel road and driveway. This works fine as long as the snow isn't more than a foot or so deep. I get out the John Deere 4610 when the snow gets deeper then the ATV can easily handle.

This is a early 70's model and came with a mowing deck, snowblower, chains and weights. The 70 year old man that I bought it from bought it brand new and still had the original owner's manuals and etc. Got it home and immediately plowed my 400 ft. drive and it did a fantastic job. It's only a 36" wide blower but only took me about 4 passes and maybe 15 or 20 minutes total. He really took great care of it.

Skid Posted January 19, 2009 #18 Posted January 19, 2009 It may be 30 years old, but its still a Deere...... Lot of them older John Deere are still mowing grass. I have an old 210 model, little smoke, but still runs good......
