PBJ Posted January 10, 2009 #1 Posted January 10, 2009 Heres a question in search of an answer. We all know that after 50k mile or so the washier that help hold seciond gear wears then. to fix it the enhgine must be pulled and the tranny opened . First question . Does the tranny open from the bottom without having to tear the whole engine open? Second question has anyone ever adapted a car body rotiserre to flip a venture over and repair the tranny without having to remove the engine? W#ould this be a viable way to get to the tranny with having to tear te engine out? If anyones thought about or tried this I'd love to know. Or is it even possible? Thanks Theres a free PB&J sandwich in it for anyone with a good answer. Phil.
Squeeze Posted January 10, 2009 #2 Posted January 10, 2009 Yes, you can replace the Thrust-Washer by flipping the Engine over and dismounting the lower Half of the Casing. It's a bit tricky to get it back, but it works. You can't dismount the lower Casing with the Motor in the Frame, while Setup flipped over or not. I think, when the Dogs on the Gear haven't slipped out yet, one could undo the rear Swingarm and take the angled Gear Assembly out of the Casing, undo Clutch Basket and Hub, built a custom designed hydraulic Press and push the whole big Bearing and the other angled Gear back on the Tranny Shaft to replace the C-shaped Thrust Washer.
Condor Posted January 11, 2009 #3 Posted January 11, 2009 It your '85 is over serial # 1413 then your question is a moot point. You have the better tranny. If it isn't.... good question...
5bikes Posted January 11, 2009 #4 Posted January 11, 2009 Thanks to this website and many great mechanics within I did mine in about 50 hours. 3 days taking it apart and 4-5 days putting it back together. I was prepared, read the several posts/articles and got lots of help via emails, phone calls. This is not for an inexperienced person without a lot of metric tools and time. I had to make the clutch basket tool and a homemade press. It takes longer to put back together due to preping parts, calls, remembering the correct reassembly procedure. I had help from another experienced local biker/mechanic friend too. My internals were in remarkably great shape, no wear at all at 19k miles. I had ordered $180 worth of parts 2 weeks ahead. Only missing a few o-rings and one retainer not critical. But to do the thrust washer replacement without taking that shaft out would required a very special press $$$, special drill press $$ and machining $ far beyond 99% of home mechanics. What is the kicker is that the washers can be seen by removing just the middle gear cover! Glad it's done, won't do it again!
PBJ Posted January 11, 2009 Author #5 Posted January 11, 2009 It your '85 is over serial # 1413 then your question is a moot point. You have the better tranny. If it isn't.... good question... Nope mine is No. 110 for 85 so I'm waiting for it to happen. I only have 35k on the bike now,so we'll see. But i try not to ride the clutch or drop it hard. Try not to do alot of stop and go riding with the Venture. I was curious if flipping the bike opver would work.
