1sttenor Posted January 7, 2009 #1 Posted January 7, 2009 Well, I got my Carbtune over the holidays and we had a really nice riding day last week. So I decided pull out the skoot, warm it up, sync the carbs and go for a ride. Alas, when I went to start it ...nothing. It would crank but not fire. I finally got one cylinder to fire so it would idle for a few seconds but that was it. I had bought a new battery in October, so I put it in just to make sure, but it cranks fine with about 12-12.5v during cranking. When I parked it last I had put Sea Foam in the tank, filled it up and rode it home to park it; that was about November 1. I'm hoping that the cursed 10% ethanol in MO isn't rearing it head, but that's what I suspect. Any thoughts? I'll load it up in the trailer and head over to the Yammy dealer to see what they think.
SilvrT Posted January 7, 2009 #2 Posted January 7, 2009 This might be a little more difficult with a 2nd gen but years ago, when I had my '85 and left it sit for a couple months or so over the winter, I had a helluva time getting it going. One trick I used was to put some gas into a spray bottle, remove the air cleaner cover, and spray gas directly into the carbs while I was cranking it. After doing this a few times, she ran fine. I also used this method to get my son's Sportster running after it had sat for a couple years.

Not sure what's going on with your bike. All our gas in this area is also 10% ethanol and I don't put my bike away the way I should which means all I do is turn the key off and park the bike for the winter and when I get ready to ride it in the spring I start it up and drive off. Most of the time this is when I put the Sea Foam in. One year I had a float stick open so I had to take the carbs apart and clean them. Probably what you are going to have to do. There is a good article in the Tech about this. I really doubt your problem is covered by warranty. Good Luck, Jerry
bikenut Posted January 7, 2009 #4 Posted January 7, 2009 Does your fuel pump click when you turn your key on. MAy have poped the fuse for the fuel pump.
ediddy Posted January 7, 2009 #5 Posted January 7, 2009 I had a smiliar problem and it was the fuel pump. I could get the bike to start but when I gave it throttle the engine would die. Sometime it wouldn't start at all. If it is the fuel pump you can tap the fuel pump a few times and see if it starts working. If it does, its the fuel pump.
1sttenor Posted January 7, 2009 Author #6 Posted January 7, 2009 Thanks for the tips. I can hear it click, but I don't hear what I would think of as pressurizing the system. I'll check the fuse. OK, where's the fuse for it? I'm sure its in the manual.
BuddyRich Posted January 7, 2009 #7 Posted January 7, 2009 If its clicking then its not the fuse. But it should click a few times and stop after the carbs fill up with fuel. Quik question. What position is the petcock in?
Squeeze Posted January 7, 2009 #8 Posted January 7, 2009 Emergency Stop Switch, checking the Fuel Pump for the "tack", "tack", "tack" Sound, Shifter in Neutral and Side Stand Switch are the first Parts to check. Wiggling on the Key/Main Switch would be my nect Guess - it's a 2Gen.
