Tape deck door

My tape deck door will not stay closed anymore. Is this part of the deck or the faring? How hard is this going to be to fix? Or should I just glue it shut? Anyone have this problem before that can help would be great. I don't want to take it to my dealer.

The latches are part of the deck, AFAIK. I have not had any problem with them, but I can tell you that there seem to be two separate latches, one on each side, that operate independently (if I push on just one corner, only that side will latch). It seems a little surprising for both of them to fail. Maybe try pushing separately on the top corners to see if either one still works? That won't fix anything other than maybe giving you a way to keep the door closed until you can fix it.

I had the same problem and eventually held it shut by wedging a nickel inbetween the door and the side. The only way to fix the door is to install a WHOLE new head unit. I had this done under warranty. I'm sure some of our more creative members could fix it without replacing the whole thing, but that is the fix according to yamaha. I probably wouldn't have done it but my dealer suggested I have it done since the warranty was about to run out.

It's a "loose nut" between the seat and handlebar...

Hope you get it figured out bud..let me know what yuo did to fix it so I can put your fix in my "fix it" data bank...

On each side of the deck there are small "pressure latches" (for lack of a better name) where the hinges push against and catch. It's possible these have become inoperable due to dust or dirt buildup. You could try removing the deck and cleaning/lubricating those little latches.

You can take the latches and springs apart, just the parts are no available separately.

 

I removed the tape deck and door completely for now, considering building in a gage or switch panel.

 

Or maybe cutting out below the tape deck and making a recess for my zumo. This would require relocation of cruise switch.

if you remove the little spring and turn the gutted tape deck housing upside down before you re-install it, then the little door will close by it's own weight LOL

If all else fails, why don't you use velcro? They sell industrial strength stuff with adhesive backs at any home improvement store. Assuming you don't use the tape deck regularly, you could apply the velcro and shut the door and it would stay shut, yet be able to get it open when you need to, as opposed to gluing it shut.

You also might look at the two screws that hold the tape deck in. Mine had loosened and when I tightened them the door stayed shut. Just a thought.
