rjmalizia Posted December 28, 2008 #1 Posted December 28, 2008 (edited) Hello all, Sorry it's been awhile since I've checked in. Between the Weather out here [WA] and the Holidays in general...well, I've been just down right busy. anyway, here's my winter project for Trigger. I was able to pick up the Harley batwing fairing off of ebay. it did come with some nice mounts, but unfortunately and evidently, the Heritage and the RS forks are not quite set up the same...so I went about creating my own. I started off by making a cardboard template, which i then transfered to wood. This worked out pretty good actually, the 1/4" plywood is soft enough and easy enough to work with, yet strong enough to hold the fairing. Once i got the wood templates aligned to my liking, i then used them, to create the soon to be perminate mounts out of aluminum angle iron. The harder part is going to be in the finializing of the lower fairing mounts. I was able to bend up a couple of pieces of scrap aluminum flat bar...but it's just not all that pretty. Which brings me to the latter steps of "paint". All black or two tone to match Trigger's current color scheme. As always any thought and suggests would be greatly appreciated. OH...one more thing. [As i climb onto my soap box] This is absolutely, the best place for "free" help and information in regards to our two wheeled loved ones. Please consider making a small donation to this site. I know it's appreciated by those that run it and those of us that use it. Thx Ron. and now for the pix.... http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-001sm.jpghttp://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-002sm.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-013sm.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-020sm.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-022sm.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081130-Front.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081130-Mount.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081204-Left.jpg Edited December 28, 2008 by rjmalizia gammer and pics alignment
abnormalwon Posted December 29, 2008 #2 Posted December 29, 2008 Looks great. Did the same trick with my 98 RSTD that has a similar paint scheme as yours. I have the bike in the classifieds so if you want to take a look you can see it there. Painting wise I believe two tone is the way to go. I did all my own painting using rattle cans for the black but had to go to a auto paint store to match up the grey. Keep working on it, you will do well and add the pride of having done the job pretty much on your own.
Monsta Posted December 29, 2008 #3 Posted December 29, 2008 I love ingenuity, doing things that others haven't and being original just as much as the next guy. However, I cannot understand why you would undertake this project. Why wouldn't you just use an RSV fairing? It has a radio! Plus it fits over the headlight better. However, I like what you've done so far.
rjmalizia Posted December 29, 2008 Author #4 Posted December 29, 2008 Abby-Normal: Yeah that's what i'm thinking [i like it]. I'm just not sure how i want the second color laid out...and is it Black on the cream(white) or cream on Black? Monsta: You know i thought about it, but i keep coming back to the fact that i just don't like the RSVR fairing. It's too round...or something. I can't really put a fingure on it other than i just don't care for it. Radio, would be nice. i run with an Ipod/Ijet setup; works pretty good for me. I was looking at a Wide Open Custom fairing. I mean "looking" as in ready to put out the $799 for the non-painted, radio equipped fairing. It's made out of plastic rather than the fiberglass that i ended up with. don't know if it makes that much of a difference and i'm only in it for $380+/- so far (includes shipping, metal, misc nuts and bolts) I haven't heard how much the paints going to run me yet [i'm too chicken to spray it myself]. many thanks Ron
RSTDRIDER Posted December 29, 2008 #5 Posted December 29, 2008 I like it I've been thinking about somthing like that myself!

brewser23 Posted December 29, 2008 #8 Posted December 29, 2008 Looking good, have to agree with you about the Venture fairing, just didn't do it for me. Good luck with your project.
rjmalizia Posted December 29, 2008 Author #9 Posted December 29, 2008 Mariner Fan: Yes, some do. This one though does not have the inner shell. I wanted to keep it as simple as possible and i figured i would have an even tougher time mounting that type of fairing. And on the up side, between the fairing and the headlight there appears to be plenty of room for some sort of glove box. I'm figuring that i can hide a windshield bag in that space and call it good.
