Pappa Bear Posted December 26, 2008 #1 Posted December 26, 2008 This past spring I rode my 89 VR to ST. Louis and back, while out ther had an issue with coolant leaking overnight. Attributed to different metal types cooling at different rates. Temps here have been pretty cold, but warmed up some today. So when I was in the garage today there it was again that puddle of coolant!!!! , without even having the engine hot!!!??? I rode that thing all summer with no problems. Help!!!!!!!
Dano Posted December 26, 2008 #2 Posted December 26, 2008 It's probably the coolant selector knob on the lower front of the engine. Try to rotate it back and forth a little, more than likely it's just the o-ring drying out and leaking. Rotating it will hopefully fix it without replacing it. Another point might be the water pump seep hole in the right side cover. Ones easier to fix than the other! Hope that's the one that's leaking! Dan

I would park my scoot in the garage hot, it would cool off at night, and there would be a small puddle under the bike the next morning. If you have checked all the usual places, hoses, Radiator drain etc. then try a new radiator cap. I found this from an old thread: 13 lbs cap for 1993 Geo Metro, NAPA# BK 7032443, Stant# 10227, Autozone CST 7513, works perfect and does not look too tacky. As I remember, the NAPA number was incorrect but if you get the cap for the 93 Geo Metro it will fit. It goes on a bit tight compared to the 25 year old VR cap but for $6 bucks it worked like a champ! Give it a try, Earl
scotty Posted December 26, 2008 #4 Posted December 26, 2008 Coolent is a very funny fluid. I have seen coolent leaks appear only when the engine is hot, only when the engine is cold, only during warm up, only during cool down. As far as it deciding to leak now, well, it had to pick some time to fail and it picked now. If the puddle is in the front right area it could be the thermostat housing seals. Mine leaked last summer only when the engine was dead cold. I hope this helps Scotty

The most likely place that is leaks from is the 90* elbow from the small hose comming from the left of the bike into the bottom of the water pump houseing it has a orange O ring that likes to leak on ocasion when the metal is very cold.The SS bike is doing it when the temps get below 35*.I am not going to change my O ring till spring.Still riding it to work daily. I will just keep up with the antifreeze till then.The part is under $2.00 at he dealer so if you have time replace it and while you are at it clean out he lower (small hose ) on the radiator I have seen 4 that were clogged completely with no over heating of the bike. Condor Posted December 26, 2008 #6 Posted December 26, 2008 Most of the time it's the Drain Valve. It leaks overnight, when it gets cold, just sitting there. Replace the 'o' ring and it'll stop. The '83 has been doing it for a couple of years now when the overnight temp drops to around 35degs, and around here the temp rarely get that low . I haven't done anything about it because it's not leaking all the time, and never during the summer. It's on the one-of-these-days to-do list...
woz111 Posted December 26, 2008 #7 Posted December 26, 2008 Try putting a pan under the drain valve to see if it is actually that that's leaking first, I'd also say its that though, our bikes are 20+ years old now so change those old O-rings, your bike will love you for it.
TxVenture Posted December 27, 2008 #8 Posted December 27, 2008 Ron, go ahead and change out those old o-rings. As woz said, they are 20yrs. old and they don't expand and contract like they used to. I had the same problem on my '93 and changing the 0-rings corrected the problem. Don H.
