okiestrrider Posted December 24, 2008 #1 Posted December 24, 2008 got a deal on a 96 rsstd w/only 9k miles this summer! been a blast to ride! previous owner installed a dyna 3000, and a barrons big air kit, and aftermarket slip ons. my only issues have been exhaust popping, mainly during warm up, but also during ride when downshifting. and poor fuel economy. about 95miles and i am switching to reserve. ignition is set at 6500 rev limit and curve 4. plugs look good and she idles smooth. any input would be appreciated. thanks.
BigBoyinMS Posted December 24, 2008 #2 Posted December 24, 2008 Sounds like a combination of lean condition and maybe leak in the exhaust. Both will cause the popping. Lean will cause bad mileage. Edit: Man, that's a good looking bike!
okiestrrider Posted December 24, 2008 Author #3 Posted December 24, 2008 hey, thanks. lean mixture would be jetting or ignition setting? thanks for the comment. believe it or not i only gave $3950. for her! and with newer metzler :happy34:tires! have since put on a stock windshield and a solo look with a fender bib.
BigBoyinMS Posted December 24, 2008 #4 Posted December 24, 2008 You may be able to adjust it out with the PMS adjustment. You should be able to find a how-to by searching here or at http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/ or http://forums.delphiforums.com/vrider/start You got a deal for that price!
Squeeze Posted December 24, 2008 #5 Posted December 24, 2008 Sounds like your on your Way to intense cleaning of the Carbs. Take them off, tear them completely apart and clean them up. Best way would be a ultrasonic Cleaner. Check the Diaphragm, reassemble everything, mount them and after balancing them, your good to go another 5 Years or 50,000 mls.
pegscraper Posted December 24, 2008 #6 Posted December 24, 2008 Nice. I like the '96s for some reason. Mileage should be better than that. I don't hit reserve until 135 at the worst, usually more like 150. Carbs out of sync can also cause exhaust popping. I'd check the jetting on the Baron's BAK and the setting of the mixture screws.
okiestrrider Posted December 24, 2008 Author #7 Posted December 24, 2008 (edited) thanks everybody, yea, i was hoping to get by with an easy fix. i didn't want to get into all that work or make things worse with my less than expert skills on carbs. but with help from these forums i may just have to tear into them. people i have talked to locally say if idling is good, runs decent and the plugs look good, don't mess with the carbs, but by the same token i like to know my bike is set up right! i wonder if ignition adjustment would help anything? that would be an easy adjustment. checking the mixture screws would also be easy? Mandride Posted January 30, 2010 #8 Posted January 30, 2010 Save yourself alot of trouble, I went through all the diagnostics and found one answer. http://www.baronscustom.com/catalog/display/254/index.html This makes your bike run like a champ, note you will hear the carbs; that detracts from some of your nice pipe sound. but the but the bike runs great. you can get just the jetting and needle kit if you want for about half the price, but I figure if I am going to do all the work why not get the most bang. Baron's guys are cool because the shop started around Royal stars and they know the bikes really good. They have also convinced me to order their Star Bar. They say the bike handles a lot better. They also have a dicount this weekend of 15%. MY bike runs very good and all the problems you mentioned have gone away. Mandride
