tonight after i turned onto my street I noticed that my directional didnt stop blinking after 100 yards or so liek normal so i took another trip around the block and that when i noticed why as my speedo wasnt working I parked in the garage and checked the cable when i took it off the wheel fitting I saw that the end was a twisted mess. I tried to turn it by hand and it was not spinning at all. so i tore into the dash and removed the cable off the speedo and the cable snins freely. stuck it back on and it dosnt turn at all connected to the speedometer? could somthning have come loose in the guage or is it probly shot? can the speedometer be changed out of the dash pod or is a new pod required? thanks for any help. oh ya would a dealor still be able to get one or is it a E Bay only deal now? I was hopeing to go to Thunder by the bay in a couple weeks and it would bve nice to know how fast im going.:headache:

 

ps I read in another thread about a bearing in the speedometer, could this freeze up and be repaired? just looking for where to start looking when i tear into the guage/

Yes you can just change the speedometer/odometer from the instrument cluster, and it's not too hard to do. Toyr best bet is to buy a cluster from ebayand learn how to take it apart first before disassembling your unit. I really don't think it is available from a dealer any more but I could be wrong. I'm sure if it is available it is an arm and a leg...

If one end turns, and the other doesn't....your cable is broken, As far as the one end not turning...All i can figure is that the broken end got hung up inside.

Get a new cable assembly, or used on E-Bay, you will need that whatever the end result.

 

If the Bushing, in the Speedo Unit is Frozen, most likley it will not be repairable, however, you will have to remove the instrument panel, to Examine the unit to make a final determination if its repairable.

Any 1st gen should work. I carefully reread your post and have to agree with Dave and George, most likely your cable broke and got bound up in the housing. The question is WHY did it break. These speedsometers have been known to seize up ocasionally.

If you take the ends of the speedo cable loose, the core can be pulled out. I am not sure which end it will come from on a venture. On my XS it pulled from the bottom end.

 

Now, if it comes apart in pieces, go to the local auto parts store and ask for a speedometer cable core. I would be surprised if they cost more than $15.

 

The new one will have to be cut to length, be sure to not cut the square end off. When you have it cut to length, there is a tip that will be affixed to the cut end. Some of the newer types have a adhesive end, just heat the cut end with a lighter and push it on. Some of them have a little metal piece that you used to crimp the end on. It is pretty self explanatory.

 

The easiest way to cut the cable is with a dremel and a thin cut off wheel. Take it slow, and let the wheel cut, dont force it.

 

When it is time to install, coat the first 2/3 of the core with some good lithium grease, and slide it back in. Pretty easy to do.

 

Sometimes the cores just wear out. I have seen them break for no good reason at all. Other times, the housing gets kinked, so it is worth examining the housing to see if it needs repair or replacement.

After Removeing the Houseing from the bike ( not hard to do ) its very easy to open the houseing ( split it ). there are only about 6 screws, and the thing splits open. I had mine open last week to re - solder the circuit board.

 

Not a big deal. Also, replace ALL the Light Bulbs, as long as you have it opened up.

 

Just work slow, you should not have any problem completing the job.

Yeah...saw that Bob. Only one bid.. your's!! You did good, but it just goes to show that with the economy being in the dumpster folks are just not spending any money for anything. That Speedo would have brought a lot more in past times. I think that's another reason why it's been slim pickin's on Ebay lately. I don't think I'm any different than anybody else, and I have some nice items I'll be listing for auction, but right now I'm not going to toss them on Ebay and have them sell for half what they're worth. I'm going to wait until things get more favorable. How does it feel to own a Venture with '0' miles on it....

I got that 85 dash condor yesterday and took 30k off my bike the speedomoter was froozen on mine and decided to just install the new dash rathen then split it open like you said. what a pain geting to the 2 plugs in the wire harness without removing the fairing. did it though but found out the difference in the 85 VR dash it had a different small plug with 5 pins over my 4 pin plug. i did some rewiring and installed the old plug and all is good. the 5th wire must have been for the venture cruise light. funny thing was even with the 4 pin plug off all worked and ran fine. . had to put some miles on her today to check it all out

Glad it worked for you Mike. I've split a dash before and it's no fun... besides being confoosing.. Too many small screws. R&R'n the dash is easiest if the problem has something to do with the tach or speedo.
