Lone Eagle Posted December 16, 2008 #1 Posted December 16, 2008 Hey, riders, I have a friend - Elgato - who just joined here today. He has a bike (dark side ) and wants to get it out here to Nor Cal. "The bike is in San Antonio. Was thinking about I-10W to LA, and then up to here.". Any idea on how he might be able to do this? He would encounter snow in some mountains wouldn't he? Thanks in advance for any help.
MAINEAC Posted December 16, 2008 #2 Posted December 16, 2008 That's the only way to go this time of year... Except for the Freak snowstorm like once in every 20 years you should be golden... After you get out of San Antonia a little ways it's pretty much Desert all the way to LA... Then you just have the Mts in CA to worry about.. You probably know how they go... good luck
Guest tx2sturgis Posted December 16, 2008 #3 Posted December 16, 2008 You have some fairly high passes, over 4000 feet, in West Texas and then again in SouthEastern Arizona..if there is weather headed that way, it COULD get nasty, depends of course on what the weathermen say, and whether he is riding or hauling the bike.
BuddyRich Posted December 16, 2008 #4 Posted December 16, 2008 Vic, I10 to I5 to I205 to I580 to I680 to 24 to 4 . But the grapevine can get snow this time of year. And then if your getting rain now you know the valley will be fogged in for a week or 2 afterwards
jburrell Posted December 16, 2008 #5 Posted December 16, 2008 Sounds like time to call a bike hauler. About 600 to CA from SA. and the bike gets there safely. Sometimes you just can't get thru those high mountain passes for days at a time. Good luck and Happy Holidays
az1103 Posted December 16, 2008 #6 Posted December 16, 2008 I10 should be clear most any year and if he goes right to the coast and up the coast on 1 as far as he needs, no snow - maybe rain but no snow.
friesman Posted December 16, 2008 #7 Posted December 16, 2008 rent a trailer from Uhaul for about 25 bucks a day, then you dont take the chance of hitting something icy and hurting yourself. Also if you take their insurance, if something happens, like the bike falling over youre covered for damages. Brian
MAINEAC Posted December 16, 2008 #8 Posted December 16, 2008 If it was me I'd ride it... You can usually find ways around closed passes in CA... It's not CO where you can get trapped in a valley for weeks... But I have a sense of adventure and will use any excuse to ride... If I had Wienies telling me to truck it would make me wanna ride it even more... But hey that's just me... You wanna be Mr. Play it Safe put it in a trailer...
MAINEAC Posted December 16, 2008 #9 Posted December 16, 2008 I just checked up on Elgato... It seems Ol Felix has a H-D Road King... Felix forget everything I wrote in the previous post... I thought you had a RSV... Take your trailer you don't need the aggravation..
Condor Posted December 16, 2008 #10 Posted December 16, 2008 I-10 will work for the most part. The only decision would be if the weather get's ugly on the Sierra passes. To by-pass all that stuff take the I-8 split out of Casa Grande Az and head over to San Diego and then north.
