5bikes Posted December 15, 2008 #1 Posted December 15, 2008 1984 with 19k miles total, leaks more than it burns. After just 5,000 miles most of the inside of the air box is covered in oil. Then the carbs get soaked inside and out too. 1. Thinking about loosely putting some course steel wool in the breather tube at the multi-purpose chamber between the cylinders. This should seperate the oil from the bypass gases. 2. Then connecting the drain hose in the front of the air box to vaccuum to drain off any oil back to the engine. Any thoughts or other ideas?
Squidley Posted December 15, 2008 #2 Posted December 15, 2008 Many times if you have this it is because the crankcase is over filled with oil. The 1st gens are especially tempermental to having too much oil. I never fill them over half of the site glass, even if it's just under the top of the glass it will spit oil in the airbox.
GeorgeS Posted December 15, 2008 #3 Posted December 15, 2008 Never put in more then 1/2 way between the two bars on the Glass. Put in 3 Qts, then run engine to Fill the New Oil Filter !!! Let Oil Settle, then top off the Level, to NO MORE THEN 1/2 WAY BETWEEN THE TWO MARKS ON THE SIGHT GLASS GOD , approves of this proceedure, !!!! Its the right thing to do ---
MiCarl Posted December 15, 2008 #4 Posted December 15, 2008 Make sure you are checking oil level with the motorcycle on the center stand. Setting the window 1/2 full with the bike on the side stand is way too much oil.
Snaggletooth Posted December 15, 2008 #5 Posted December 15, 2008 Yeppers on the half way point in the glass. But here is a copy of the Yammy tech info on connecting the drain line to the breather hose. It's a lousy copy but it will give the basic idea. If the oil level is correct the drain line doesn't have much to do.
Gearhead Posted December 15, 2008 #6 Posted December 15, 2008 Mine does that. The oil stays in the lower section of the airbox, away from the filter. The only thing about it that bothers me is that it seeps out arount the rubber boots to the carbs and runs down the outside, slowly making a mess. Jeremy
91nwl Posted December 15, 2008 #7 Posted December 15, 2008 Keeping the oil level below the half way mark on the sight glass and storing the bike on the centerstand also helps with the leaking around the stator wires, which you probably have. I maintain mine at about the 1/4 mark, 1/2 maximum and I check it often. Mine does not burn any and does not soil the airbox, just leaks a little onto the exhaust collector and ground.

Jeremy I sealed the boots to the box with a bit of silicone; keeping the oil at half glass, and now everything is tickety boo. I just opened up the box after 20,000+kms and its almost dry.
