Ok guys my 83 is running great just turned 73,000 mi,Coming home from a meet & eat.My oil light came on while going down hwy.pulled over and checked level which is good - full of oil mobil one 15w50.I started back down the road no light untill about 10 mi it came back on,stop and checked? everything seems ok,light stayed on all the way home 15 more miles or so.Watched temp gauge too ,did great cool running in 90F heat.So am I missing something or just replace level sensor for oil and go on.Engine has no knocks or weird sounds like a second gen.I had to put that in .

You know someone will make a crack at the 83 Venture.

Sounds like a possible CMS error to me, check the solder joints first. The repair is similar to CLASS controller fix. If no cold solder joints are found, then check other components.

Buddy; When you visually checked the oil level, what did you see? I've noticed that when the level get towards the bottom edge of the sight glass the oil light will come on when going up hill and turn off when going level or downhill. I don't run the oil level more than half way up on the sight glass, to avoid fouling the air cleaner box. It might be as simple as adding a half pint or so. My .02 worth! Ride safe, Steve

I am having the same problem with my 83, all was fine until my last oil change, now the light comes on and stays on for a short while, goes off, comes on, goes off, and so on..........oil level is fine, not overheating, no strange sounds, I think its a circuit board problem also.

I set the side stand on a 2x4 and checked the oil level, which is even with upper level mark on sight glass,I took the bike on a 200 mi ride today down to Tx. down around Bowey and back dang it was hot. Arms got sunburned - bummer, anyway the oil light came on two times so I thinking the same thing now - CMS board.

I'll take it apart sometime this week and check all the connections & solders.

Thanks for all the input guys:thumbsup2:

How close is the bike to vertical with the kickstand on a 2x4? Technically, oil is supposed to be checked with the bike on the centerstand, and I think the level in the window may be fairly sensitive to the state of plumb of the bike.
