Skid Posted December 12, 2008 #26 Posted December 12, 2008 We have a Panasonic 50 inch plasma tv... The plasmas has come a long ways to prevent burn outs etc. I did a lot of research before this one and discovered it is better to go plasma with any over 50 inches. Also the picture is just as clear off to the sides as it is straight on looking at it.
Yammer Dan Posted December 12, 2008 #27 Posted December 12, 2008 Thats the answer!!! I'll go to Skid's to watch Game!!!
V7Goose Posted December 13, 2008 #28 Posted December 13, 2008 Listen to timgray (post #14 above), he knows what he is talking about! ONe thing I did not see while skimming all the responses so far - reconsider the placement above the fireplace. Even if you don't have to worry about the heat, the height of the TV may be a problem. This really depends on the specific configuration of your room, both the mantle height and how far back you will be sitting. But, in the vast majority of cases, the wall above a fireplace is too high. Think about sitting the front row of the theater. One more thing to think long and hard about - what are you going to connect to the TV? Think cables. I am a bit of a geek with audio and video stuff, and the mess of cables behind even my most simple setup will gag you. Absolutely no way to run these things to a TV above the fireplace unless the entire wall is custom made just for this purpose! Goose

az1103 Posted December 13, 2008 #31 Posted December 13, 2008 I just got a Samsung 52" List Price 2700, got it for 1920 from buydig.com . LOVE_IT!!!! But whatever you get, I would reconsider the over the fireplace location...... Not only is the equipment at risk but it's too high for comfortable viewing and if the fireplace is on it's light will interfere with viewing.
SilvrT Posted December 13, 2008 #32 Posted December 13, 2008 I think you guys have gone to a whole different level. now, why would you think that?... unless of course, you've gone there too!! :witch_brew:
got2mnytoys Posted December 13, 2008 #33 Posted December 13, 2008 Personally I have gone to all Plasma's now and the 52" pioneer has the best picture still ( but you pay out the nose for a pioneer),no matter what you buy in 2 months there will be something better out and whatever you decide to buy will be alot cheaper in 2 months and I wouldn't buy a display even though they are usually offered @ a good price they want last long

Goose Ok our fireplace, or, mounting area for the TV will be 16 feet from the seating area and the mantle is 5 feet off the floor. So, the LCD bottom will be at 5 feet and top of screen will be close to 7 feet 2 inches. TOO HIGH ?
cecdoo Posted December 13, 2008 #35 Posted December 13, 2008 Get the biggest panasonic plasma you can afford, I bet you wont reget it, beautiful picture:mo money: Craig
V7Goose Posted December 13, 2008 #36 Posted December 13, 2008 Ok our fireplace, or, mounting area for the TV will be 16 feet from the seating area and the mantle is 5 feet off the floor. So, the LCD bottom will be at 5 feet and top of screen will be close to 7 feet 2 inches. TOO HIGH ? I believe you will find that uncomfortable for extended viewing. In addition, if anyone in the family has a tendency to do do something else while watching TV, such as knit or read the paper, you will find that it is hard to just glance up at the TV to see the picture. That height will require a complete head movement. Under most conditions, comfortable TV watching means the center of the picture is either at or a little below eye level. The muscle tension to hold the head up to focus higher will become uncomfortable over extended viewing. Recliners will help some to angle the body back. Goose
Al Bates Posted December 13, 2008 #37 Posted December 13, 2008 This is sample: Samsung 46" LCD with 120 Hertz's. If it's your first one go a little bigger like to a 46" Enjoy your TV one of the best decisions I have made, now we have 4 of them all different sizes, only the 46" has the 120 Hz Over the fireplace: No-No
frogmaster Posted December 13, 2008 #38 Posted December 13, 2008 My Subscription to Consumer Reports Says... Plasma uses TWICE the electric than the LCD's.
friesman Posted December 13, 2008 #39 Posted December 13, 2008 My Subscription to Consumer Reports Says... Plasma uses TWICE the electric than the LCD's. That stat is when the screen is mostly white as plasma fires all the cells when producing a bright colour but when producing a dark colour like black or a dark green like turf the cells dont light up ,using less power. An LCD has the flourescents running all the time and the liquid crystals just block the light from coming through.. SO it does depend on what youre watching, if youre a hockey fan its gonna cost a bit more because of all the white, if youre a football fan it should be about the same. A Plasma screen still uses substatially less power than a picture tube type TV when running and they give off about the same amount of heat where the LCD runs cooler because of the cooler type Flourescent or LED lighting in behind the screen. FozzyUSN Posted December 14, 2008 #40 Posted December 14, 2008 Something you may consider, considering your age and eye sight. I recently purchased a 42" LCD. While at the showroom looking around, the salesman showed me both a 1080 and a 720 resolution set. With their demonstration video going, I could see absolutely no difference in pictures. Then the salesman showed me the most important difference, PRICE, to the tune of about $400. I have since purchased another 42" with the same resolution even cheaper. Hope this gave you something more to think about.

FozzyUSN Posted December 15, 2008 #43 Posted December 15, 2008 Always more to think about ! What brand did you purchase? The first 42" I purchased was a Toshiba Regza and the second was an LG plus the surround system that Best Buy had on special here while back. I havn't hooked up the LG yet as I havn't moved completely into the house yet. The Toshiba on the other had is great.
skydoc_17 Posted January 26, 2009 #44 Posted January 26, 2009 Hey Dave, Boy you better be mounting the plasma tv on your new scoot! I can't believe you are thinking about buying a TV when you need to be thinking about buying a Motorcycle!!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Jean works at Target in electronics Dept. she says the Samaung is to die for! She also said that if you wait till after the Super Bowl the prices go way down. Earl and Jean
autopilot Posted January 26, 2009 #45 Posted January 26, 2009 I got the 42" Panasonic plasma. Put a High Def signal to it and it'll make yer eyes bug out. Man what a picture and at the time price was better than the others. With Circuit City going belly up, I'd be watching for some serious discounting; ya might get lucky! Ideally, the screen should be approximately at or slightly below eye level. This is particularly true if you have a sound system/home theater set up. With the exception of the subwoofer, the satellite speakers are supposed to be about head height as you sit. mounting the screen high will affect the relationship between what you hear and where your brain believes the sound is supposed to be coming from, compared to what you are seeing. (or at least make it way more difficult than it needs to be) Crutchfield.com used to have lots of good learning info about sound imaging, etc. Anyway, those are my comments for the for what it's worth file!

I have been checking ebay, craiglist, etc. for the right bike if I can ever narrow down my search. Denise has also been looking as she misses the rides as much as I. With the amount of job lay offs, furloughs, etc. bikes are for sale everwhere ! Denise wants me to check into a HD Ultra Classic and I am not sure exactly what I want... Maybe looking at additional surgery on my foot due to the crash last June the doctor is wanting to remove 2 more damaged veins. He called it a soft tissue crush injury which caused much more damage than I expected.
