Long Tall Posted December 3, 2008 #1 Posted December 3, 2008 Hey All: Any help here would be appreciated....Going to add some Chrome Grips and Levers to the 06 Venture.... How do the end weights come off?....Is there a "trick" to taking our grips off....I have read about using air pressure, etc... Going with one of the Pro-One Grips below...I have seen both on a V-Star and Road Star.....Probably going with the Ribbed ones?... George In Virginia
Gray Ghost Posted December 3, 2008 #2 Posted December 3, 2008 pull the little cap at the end of the weights, if I recall correctly it is a hex socket in the end. I pulled mine about a year ago to put on some heated grips and they were fairly easy to remove.
jburrell Posted December 3, 2008 #3 Posted December 3, 2008 I just chaged mine and there is nothing to it. Tape the weights and use a pipe wrench to loosen them and then they just come off. The left side will need to be tugged off as they are just glued to the handlebars. The new grips I bought are also glued back in place and both sides slipped on with no issues. The right side will require that you separate the 2 sides of the switch that houses the CC and kill switch. There is 3 screws in this housing you just need to undo the long ones and separate the 2 sides completly. Once you have done that you will need to remove the 2 gas cables from the existing handle and remove it carefully. You need to be sure you remember which cable goes on top and which on bottom. Reverse install the new grip on the right side. I used Kurykhan grips and they look and feel great. Hope this helps
Eck Posted December 3, 2008 #4 Posted December 3, 2008 In my opininion I would never do this for you can easily damage the chrome and gouge the weight by using a pipe wrench. Yes, the end weights can be removed using this method but the choice is yours.. On the very tip or end of the chrome weight, there is a small plastic chrome cap that can easily be removed by using the blade of a pocket knife and carefully pry it outward & off. Inside the hole that this plastic cap covers is an allen socket head bolt. Use the proper size allen head wrench turnging counter clock wise or left direction (lefty loosen / righty tighty) and the end weight will come off as it was designed to be removed.

jburrell Posted December 3, 2008 #10 Posted December 3, 2008 If you can get em off with the Allen wrench then you're weights weren't nearly as hard to get off as mine. No matter how hard I tried the weights would not budge that way. However, after being heavily taped the weights came off with just a slight pull of a "PIPE WRENCH". At least I offered input on how to get the old grips off and how to install the new grips to help him out. My old weights have NO marks from the removal as I know how to properly tape them top protect them. There is typically several ways to accomplish a task.

flb_78 Posted December 4, 2008 #12 Posted December 4, 2008 You'll be pissed at yourself if you don't reinstall the weights. I bought my bike with "custom" grips and the weights had been removed. The handlebars buzzed and killed my wrists. I found some take offs on eBay and all is more gooder now.

The "Southern" thing was just for fun....Did not want to offend any here, Hey Opps...I remember that "hey" thing being said a lot by my wife's clan North of the Mason Dixon line....Again....JUST HAVING FUN HERE Also its...cold here in Old Virginia and I can't get out to ride....might as well stir something up.....
