Monsta Posted December 3, 2008 #1 Posted December 3, 2008 I was out riding today and stopped at one of my favorite view sites on the southern end of the Big Island. For those who know, this is right above Whittington Beach Park in the District of Ka'u. It was a GLORIOUS day! To the right you'll see the plume that is emitted from the Pu'u O'o vent at Kilauea Volcano. It is responsibly for all the Vog (google it) here on the Big Island. On the right side you'll see (not very well though) the steam plume from where the lava is entering the ocean. Basically the island is growing. In about 100,000 years that's gonna be one heck of a nice beach!
ronhenry4 Posted December 3, 2008 #2 Posted December 3, 2008 Nice pic im soooo jelous i live in ohio and it was snowing today not very good for rideing
Yama Mama Posted December 3, 2008 #3 Posted December 3, 2008 That is a gorgeous photo. You are a lucky guy to be able to see such beauty on a daily basis. Thanks for sharing that photo. Yama Mama:draming:
MidlifeVenture Posted December 3, 2008 #4 Posted December 3, 2008 I think all us Northerners are envious. Only 107 days till spring:parrots:
Skid Posted December 3, 2008 #5 Posted December 3, 2008 What a nice location, must be rough to live like that.

DragonRider Posted December 3, 2008 #7 Posted December 3, 2008 (edited) Very cool shot, but Im sure the folks here on the mainland dont want to hear about all the great riding you do this time of year over on the island, especially the ones experiencing the cold snow and everything else that stops a sane person from riding this time of year....................BUT..........I sure do, and the best way to tell it is with pictures, Plenty of pictures..........so lets hear and see all about it...............:stirthepot: Edited December 3, 2008 by DragonRider Stirring the pot...................
Venturous Randy Posted December 3, 2008 #8 Posted December 3, 2008 Hey Ken, thanks for the great photo. Have you run out of new roads to ride yet? Here in east Tennessee, western North Carolina and south west Virginia, there are so many great motorcycle roads within 100 miles, I will probably never get them all ridden. RandyA
Crash Posted December 3, 2008 #9 Posted December 3, 2008 That's just beautiful. Wish I was there with you. As my fellow Ohioan said "cold and snowing here" But it is nice to know some of us have great weather all year. Enjoy your riding and keep the beautiful pictures coming.
georgew48 Posted December 3, 2008 #10 Posted December 3, 2008 Posting that photo falls under the cruel and unusual punishment rule for those of us stuck in Ohio for the winter. Very nice photo though.
mraf Posted December 3, 2008 #11 Posted December 3, 2008 Beautiful pic. Ahh, warm ocean breezes, spacious vistas and no snow. I couldn't stand it. Life would be too good. Around here it's cold wind, crowded vistas and snow. Winter sucks. Nice pic though.
Condor Posted December 3, 2008 #12 Posted December 3, 2008 Heck, I'm in the Sacramento Valley here in NorCal., and I'm jealous. We've been socked in with fog and low temps for about 4 days now. Dark, dank...and miserable... Is there really a sun up there???:Sad_0241:
Monsta Posted December 3, 2008 Author #13 Posted December 3, 2008 Have you run out of new roads to ride yet? RandyA I've ridden on virtually every road worth riding on. But here's the beauty of that. First off, the scenery while the same always seems different; different clouds, different feel of the air, different lighting etc. etc. Secondly, I know the roads like the back of my hand. They almost become like a race track to me. There is something quite comforting knowing most of the corners and routes. I can out ride most folks on them simply because I am so familiar with them. I have examples of just about every kind of corner there is here on this island and this allows me to practice them at will, mostly (see #3). There are some very challenging roads here. Maybe I'll make a video one day... Third, this island is big enough that I can not ride on one part of the island for months! I hadn't been on that lower route through Volcano in about 8 months. Although I know almost every inch of the road, it still felt new to me. I was on my bike for about 4.5 hours yesterday. I attached a map of the Big Island. If you look towards the top of the island you'll see the word "KAWAIHAE", it is right below the number 27. I basically live where the 7 is. I rode to the right (as you're looking at the map) and got on 190 and went south to 200 (Saddle Road). This road is about 5600' and traverses between the two main mountains. Once in Hilo I stopped to run an errand and then continued on Route 11 though Volcano national Park and on around the island to Kailua-Kona. You can see Whittington Beach Park on the map. That's around where I took the picture from. Once in Kona I got back on the 190 and headed home. I was on my bike for about 4.5 hours yesterday. I'll post more pics for you freezin' folk over there on the Mainland. I didn't realize y'all would enjoy looking at them. I used to live in Ohio (Hamilton) and Massachussets (Fitchburg/Leominster) so I know winter...and hate it just like most of you.
