I'm on my third GPS....took that many to find one that does what I want.

I have the Lowrance Iway 500c like several others here, and think it's great. It is heavier than most of the others, but that is due to the fact that it has an internal hard drive. Huge capacity for your tunes or whatever.

My previous 2 both had screens that would washout in bright sun. Not worth a darn for use on a bike. The screen on my 500c is bright enough to see even in direct bright sunlight.

I need to update my maps to the newest version, and will probably do that before spring. Mine are at least 4 years old and missing some newer construction. Wish Lowrance updates were free, but they're not. Gotta fork out $79. Even so, I think it's worth it.

I have the garmin 2720 too and really like how it works. Waterproof, rugged large screen etc. I wish it had an internal battery so I could take it in the hotel room to plan the next day.

Color01 - how are you getting audio out of it? I plugged a cable into the aux and the audio was terrible. I heard that you have to have some kind of special cable?

I am on my 2nd Lowrance... I have a iway 500c and a iway 600c... This GPS has some of the best features... Large Display, touch screen, customizable screen, mp3 player (10 gb on 500 and 5gb on the 600), and is water resistant (a zip-loc sandwich bag makes any gps waterproof)...

BUT... The hard drive does have some issues... The vibration using a handlebar mount messes up the hard drive and intermitent problems range from freezing up to constant re-booting... I am going to come up with a different mount and try it again in the spring... Also at times during high speed runs 75+ mph (in car & bike) the GPS has trouble keeping up with the result being a arrow on a white screen.. I have had it reboot and freeze in the car a couple of times but it happens more frequently on the bike..

Bottom line: The Lowrance is a fine unit and may be the best one out there but you should be aware of it's quirks/bugs before buying one... I got mine on ebay for $325.00 brand new in the box..

Mainiac,

I have a 500C, mine is on a Ram mount to the handlebars and I have had very little trouble with it. I did have problems when I stuck it up on the car dash next to the windshield, found out that if I ran the defroster on cold it would alleviate the problem. Seem to be very prone to heat.

Most of my problems were at higher speeds (over 75).. It doesn't like the cold too much either... I've gone out on cold mornings in the car and it won't do anything until the defrosters warm it up..

I use a Magellan 2500T Crossover. It is water tight and is versatile. It can be booted in the outdoor mode and be used like a portable hand held or booted in the marine mode. Thus the name crossover. It can also be use as a marine GPS if you load marine maps or install a memory card in the expansion slot with marine maps on it. It will also give you a list of restaurants, motels, parks and many other points of interest complete with address and phone numbers. It is a MP3 player as well as a photo viewer. It will remove from the handlebar mount in seconds and can be installed in an automobile. The quick and easy removal has its pros and cons......The easy removal makes it easy for someone to steal. It doesn't come with the handlebar mount but it does come with a windshield mount for and automobile. YOu can charge the batteries and it will last for abbout 8 hours or you can plug it into the cigerette lighter. I'm not sure if Magellan still makes them but I just looked on ebay and you can get a factory refurbished one from $100.00 - $200.00 and a motorcycle mount for another $12.00. I've been impressed with mine.

Wow!!! Talk about opinions.... :) I was going to suggest that you make sure you can read the screen in direct sunlight, but since there's so much input on the subject I don't think I will.... :whistling:

Wow,

after reading about some of the glitches of some of the higher end GPS units, I'm glad I went cheap. When I bought mine Best Buy had them powered up on a display so you could play with them prior to buying.

The Magellan was by far the easiest of the ones they had on display to use. That and the fact that it was the cheapest made my decision for me. I've had it for a couple of years now with no problems whatsoever. It has never locked up or got me lost. It has a large touch screen that's easy to use. It's light weight and has an internal battery (with a short life). The voice does kind of ***** at me if I take a different road than the one suggested, but you can't have everything.

I currently have a magellan Crossover but I'm contemplating an upgrade to the Garmin 378. Water proof up to IPX 7 standards. Marine, Auto, and Motorcycle approved...

I was happy with my crossover for about a week, when it got wet for about 5 seconds in some rain before I could drop it into my tank bag, it never worked again and getting a warranty replacement was like pulling teeth...

Sorry to hear that Dr Bar. I haven't had mine in a hard rain but I have had it in a couple of showers and it didn't harm it at all . I haven't had to deal with Magellan at all. I know that it is frustrating when the factory doesn't stand behind their product.
