I'm also looking for the LIT number for the First Gen Service Manual. I have one but can't find it right now. I'd like to use it as part of the reference structure. For some reason paper sources seem to make the senior editors happier than using all internet based references.

 

LIT-11616-04-06

 

That is the number on the PDF version for 83-85.

Well I decided to jump in and add to the Second Gen page. I added a bit about year to year differences and a blurb about the Millennium Edition RSV.

Any chance I can get you to merge those into the appearance section, since it's been partly covered there?

 

I would have mentioned this on your Wiki user talk page, but you haven't started one and it's not really apropriate for me to start one for you. If you'd like you can go to the history tab, click on my name, and see how mine's formatted. I ripped the design off from another editor, who ripped it off from another editor, etc. Once you have a User page we can chat stuff like this up there, as is the normal practice.

 

If you go to the Yamaha Venture page you'll find all the pages I've put together that are about the V-4 based Yamahas, aside from the V-Max, which already had a page.

Squeeze, it looks like the original was the V-Max and the new one is the VMAX. That's even the way they're spelled on the Yamaha web sites. I corrected the timeline template to reflect the VMAX spelling rather than the V-Max II spelling. It might take a little bit for that one to refresh throughout the system.

 

Could it be that there was a different spelling in the European market?

 

There is a note in the V-Max discussion section indicating that the first V-Maxes into Europe didn't have V-Boost. Know anything about that? Also, they're looking for a picture they can use. Right not it looks like they have one ripped from Yamaha's site, which they'll probably eventually have to take down. Got a pic you'd like to put in its place? I think they're still looking.

 

They're also looking for a technical write up on V-Boost. Does this sound right?

Also, if I remember correctly the new VMAX uses a system that shortens the air intake horns inside the airbox by raising extension horns away from the fixed horns. Know anything about that?

Not that i know of. To my Knowledge, back in '85 Yamaha introduced the Bike wrongly as V-max and the Media took that over, but they allways wanted to have it Vmax and they changed the Term. European Versions came up in 1990, i think, when the French Yamaha Boss Jaques Olivier twisted Yamaha's Arms and Legs until they gave him the Bike to France.

That's right, the first european Model's didn't have the V-Boost mounted, they have had other Cams (MKII me speculates) and 125 hp instead of 140some hp, depending the Country of Delivery, and some other Differences. They're called 2EN and 3LR Models. Sorry, no Pic available, because most of my Folks have mounted the V-Boost-System long Time ago.

Air Intake is wrong.... refering to the Throttle Position is wrong.

 

The famous V-Boost is a patented System from Yamaha which is opening Butterfly Valves between the Manifolds of the 1st and 2nd and between 3rd and 4th cylinder starting from 5750 RpM. The opening is gradually to rising the RpM-Signal provided by the Ignition System and it's on full open Position at 8000 RpM. There is a small black Box that computes the Signal to a Servo-Motor and the Servo is pulling a Wire to open the Butterfly-Valves. The V-Boost System generates additional 10 Percent of the Top Power Rating of the Engine. Dynoed on my Bike with 88kw versus 80kw on the rear Wheel.

Thats correct. The System is called YCC-I, Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake. The Airhorns inside the Airbox are lifted by a Servo to open up the Airway underneath the actual Horns and shortening the Lenght of the Intake System from 138mm(not sure about the Actual Number) to 52mm. This System had it's first Appearance with the 2006 YZF-R1. It's not an Idea from Yamaha. The MV Augusta F4 Tamburini was the first Bike with such a System. Afaik Masssimo Tamburini invented this Idea. Edited by Squeeze

I just read the Vmax Discussions Page. It was in Fact Ed Burke who designed the Vmax. And he made them Guys in Japan develop and produce the Bike.

Squeeze, I added your info to the V-Max/VMAX page. You might want to check and make sure I got it right.

 

I'm going to stick with V-Max for now because of this page.

 

I'm looking for a nice picture of the bike, not the intake. As I said, their image is probably ripped from Yamaha's site. Now, if you have a nice pic of a Max, perhaps yours could be the one they use... If you want to give it a shot let me know and I can upload a pic for you if you'd like.

 

By the way, I'm afraid my German is limited to what the average sailor would learn. Not real useful if you know what I mean. I studied French in school and am no good with that due to a severe lack of use over the years. Typical "American" I'm afraid.

I understand. I'm not exactly an oldtimer myself.

 

I welcome the additions, I'd just like to keep it as smooth as reasonably possible. Some while back someone from the Delphi site added their info and hacked it to shreds. Part of it got dropped into the middle of another paragraph. I smoothed it back out when they didn't come back, but I made sure it was there so they wouldn't feel shorted on the deal.

 

It's a Wiki, so it's open to everyone.

I suspect it's a US vs Europe thing. The European site has it as VMAX the US site has it as V-Max. I'm not the primary maintainer of the V-Max/VMAX site so I'm going to leave it alone. Seems safer.

 

Great looking VMAX, but that's very not stock. Which is a good thing, of course. I've always loved the Max, but Irene likes to ride on the back... Maybe someday.

 

I should probably wait and see how my additions are greeted before I get too carried away. I don't want to wind up in an undo war with anyone.

steve! in the venture section you wrote that the td was introduced in '05, but the td was introduced in '97. i would like to think that us '96-'01 royals had a hand in this come-back! since 01 when i bought my new '01 royal star, the last year they made them in the small version, i raised h#!! with every yamaha rep and dealer i came in touch with, that they needed to bring it back! was very happy to see it in july'04 re-appear in it's BIGGER SIZE. hope i don't look like i'm bragging, but it was an outrage that yamaha almost lost out on the best bike on the road, don. The '05 and newer RSTDs are a different enough bike from the '96 - '01s that they deserve their own spot. I say Steve has it right. Unless I'm mistaken, he isn't done with the '96 - '01 page and he'll get around to mentioning the original TD there. I think he's still looking for pictures of one, too.

First off, let me state that this started because I've had a First Gen and two Second Gens, and know a little bit about them. It has snowballed from there into less familiar territory.

 

It appears that there were two machines that have been called Royal Star Tour Deluxe. The first was based upon the original Royal Star with a horizontal shock absorber. The second is the current model, which seems to be mostly a Venture without the fairing and trunk.

 

It appears that the current Venture based RSTD came out in mid '04 as an '05 model. It also appears that the original Royal Star based model ended with the '01.

 

I'm trying to figure out how to phrase all this and on just which page to place what.

 

Let me assure you that I want this to be as accurate as possible. As such, it would seem I'm no where near done. Of course, all corrective info is welcomed, but please be patient.

 

Question: Did the Royal Star based Tour Deluxe have hard bags? If so, did they latch differently than the Venture based Tour Deluxe? I believe I've received a pic of an early (First Gen, so to speak.) TD. It has hard bags that latch more like the MK2 First Gen Venture. I also note that it has Tourdeluxe on the front fender - one word.

 

In time I'll know a little about the TDs as well. Anyway, thanks for the info.

the 97-01 td had differant hardbags from the venture, they had double-latched lids that was removable( many was lost because of not being latched right- a poor design that was corrected on venture). http://www.wisiwiw.com/StarGallery/index.php there's a few pics on here, don't know if you can use one of them. i'll try to get a pic if possible. you are doing a fine job on the pages, was just tryinging to help out.

Tazmocycle, Pegscraper, and any other RS riders, please check out the RS Wiki and let me know how I'm doing. Have I gotten anything wrong? Is there something else unique that I need to add? I plan to add a picture of an RS Tour Classic once I get the details ironed out.

The Venture Touring Society was certainly the original owner's group for the Venture. They are now called the Motorcycle Touring Association and are an "all brands" club. I am still a member and they are a great group. Wish their website would get more active though.

In the clubs part did anyone put in The Venture Touring Society? I belonged to Michigan Chapter 4 back then in early 90s:backinmyday::backinmyday::backinmyday: for all of us old people.
I haven't added them. No particular reason other than time. I am aware of their origins and change over the years. It seems to me this would be best put on the Venture Royale page as an historical note. I don't want to get into listing every motorcycle group out there. That might be best done on its own page.
