First off - is it necessary to remove the lower fairings to clean/replace the air filters as stated in the service manual? If so, then is there some trick to getting the allen head bolt off on the inside of the fairing? The two on the outside come right off, but I've been turning on the inner one for a long, long time and it doesn't seem to be loosening a bit.

Thanks.

If I remember correctly you only have to remove the ones on the outer edge of the back and the 2 on the front.

Thanks for the diagram. The one I can't get is bolt number 9. It just turns and turns - never comes loose. Doesn't make any sense.

Can you get something behind it like a screwdriver to pry on it a bit while turning it...sounds like the threads aren't catching on the clip ??

I don't see any way to get behind it. It's inside the fairing.

To be honest with you, sometimes it's just easier to remove the lowers to be able to have easy access to all the hardware. I have found that even though it seems like it's more work to take it all off, it's quicker in the long run.

You can just pull the fairing off. The nut is encased inside a rubber mount and it will pop out of the fairing. Mine got where it would not tighten up and just spin inside the fairing. I had to order a new one. It is a poor application.

Mine popped out the last time i had it off and I like to have never got it back in.I went to

the auto parts store the next day and bought some speed nuts and screws. The next time I have to take it apart I'm going to replace them.

If you can get to the clamp that holds the air filter assy on with a long phillips head screwdriver, you don't have to remove the fairing. You may have to remove it the first time and then turn the clamp so you can reach it when you reassemble it.
