I have ordered new brake pads to install this weekend on my 07 RSV (30k miles). I noticed that on the front brakes, the inside pads appear almost new while the outside pads are very close to the wear indicator. I know that this seems to be normal on the rear brakes but.............

1. Is this normal on the front brakes? and

2. Can I reuse the 2 good pads (1 from either side) on 1 caliper and just install new pads on the other side?

I have ordered a full set of pads for front and rear so having parts is not an issue, but if I can save a set for next time that would be good too.

Over the years I have always swapped them out..doubles the weaar life and saves money..

On the rear set of pads, I always swap the inner pad out with the outside pad to make them last longer too, because the inner pad seems to wear down three times faster than the outside pad.

Just dont wait till it is metal to metal (steel pad backing plate to rotor contact)....:whistling: for this will cost you some bucks to fix if you let it wear into the rotor....

Just curious. How long have your had your brake pads on your bike? How many miles riding?

N3FOL,

Not sure if you were asking him (or me)

He stated the following in his post;

I on the other hand just turned 60k and I have replaced the rear pads once and still have original pads on the front.

@ 30k miles I am getting ready to be on my 2nd set of rear pads. This will be my 1st change for the front.

I had to replace the rear rotor on my 05 RSTD at 14K as the pads were gone. I bought an EBC rotor and pads from Bike Bandit. I also replaced my front pads at 20K with EBC's and that reduced the squeal. Pad were less than 50% worn and had plenty of life left but the constant squeal was a bit too much.

Nate,

This is just me talking here so take it for what it's worth. I would replace all of them and be done with it. You can keep the good spare set of pads for an emergency, but for the $100 to replace all the pads, it's just cheap insurance....:2cents:

I just replaced my first set at 31K miles. Although some are reusable, I opted to change them all and start fresh. I did save some good one for spares, but I'm thinking I'll buy another set for spares.

Awesome! You made your brakes last that long. I notice that the rear brake has lots more stopping power than the front or it just could be my imagination due to the air shocks. Good Luck on the install...I heard that it is not that bad to replace.

Ride safe.

After 60K miles...on original front brakes...congratulations on that milestone. I guess if it still has lots of pad, why bother replacing. :301:

I have not really looked at the rear side...but it probably is easier to replace rear pads if you remove the side bags.

The install for the brake pads is pretty easy, even for mebang%20head.gif Removing the saddlebags is the only way to go for the rear brakes. It actually takes me longer to empty the bags than it does to replace the pads.

I have been able to get close 17k out of my rear pads and I figure that is pretty good from what I have seen around here considering I use my back brake aaaaaaaaaaaalot.

Point taken Squid..............BTW are the factory pads HH? If they are not then I guess it's a no brainer to replace all at the same time.

I dont think that the stock pads are rated that way. I know you have heard us talk about the EBC HH pads, them being sintered. It might feel a bit funny at 1st as they will more than likely grab at different rates. I usually keep my old ones if they are in decent shape for spares as I have had some folks come over for maintenance and realise that their pads are almost completely gone. Thats when I tell them that I have a spare set to get them by....had to do that 2 times so far.

I agree...anything moving should have the means to stop at a certain point. This thread gives me confidence, when it is time to replace brake pads.

I just changed mine to Kevlar pads. the front still had alot of pad left but the noise was too much. I got sick of sounding like a school bus comming to a stop. So far I love the new pads but time will tell how they last. They were a GREAT price too all 3 sets for the price of one.:2cents:

I got my new pads today and will be installing ALL of them tomorrow. I have to say that http://www.motorcycleproshop.com/ is the place to order brake pads. I ordered them Monday night and they arrived today. I got a full set of front and rear for $90 (including shipping), cheapest place I've found yet.

I have also ordered a tire form them in the past and had a very good experience. Quick service and shipping and some of teh best prices around.

Well it took me a day longer to get to the brakes than I thought, but the new rear pads are in. I pulled the front calipers and guess what:think:................there is still at least 1/2 of the pads left. Guess I won't be changing them yet afterall. I am not sure what I was looking at:confused24: when I thought the outer pads were gone, but this was a pleasant surprise.:thumbsup2:
