artventurer Posted November 4, 2008 #1 Posted November 4, 2008 Hey all, I'm getting a loud backfire/pop through the exhaust on longer decel. (eg. downshifting on the highway, before an exit ramp etc.) Have the stock mufflers on, had RK's, drilled, and thought it might be because of the open pipes, so went back to stock, and the AIS is plugged. Possible exhaust leak? Was wondering if anybody has had a similar condition, and what you may have done to fix this as it is annoying. The carbs have never been played around with, so was wondering if that may have something to do with it. Have not noticed a performance change though. The bike has 40k miles on it. Please help.
RedRider Posted November 4, 2008 #2 Posted November 4, 2008 There can be several causes. 1) Leak in exhaust system. 2) Poorly sync'd carbs. 3) Rich mixture in carbs. The first is easiest to check. Take off exhaust trim and check for leaks while the bike is running. For #2 and #3, you need special tools/equipment. Throw out a posting to see if anyone in your area has a CarbTune and/or a ColorTune. Or, just wait until spring and visit Ohio for Don's (Freebird) Maintenance day. Good luck. RR
