sefner Posted November 2, 2008 #1 Posted November 2, 2008 Anyone have a recommendation for a first gen headlight replacement? Thanks, Vince 84' Venture
ctraylor Posted November 2, 2008 #2 Posted November 2, 2008 Take the bulb out and to Auto Zone and they will match it for you. I have bought 2 there and both times they had it in stock.
MiCarl Posted November 2, 2008 #3 Posted November 2, 2008 If you find one I'd appreciate if you'd post the part number. I'm pretty sure mine isn't stock since it's blue-white and not very bright. Thanks.
Condor Posted November 2, 2008 #4 Posted November 2, 2008 There's a couple of brighter bulbs available as replacements for the MkI's. Ask the clerk for something a little more potent.... Can't remember the part number but the standard bulbs are fairly common....
bongobobny Posted November 2, 2008 #5 Posted November 2, 2008 OK mone of the best things you can do to get more light out of the MK1's (besides switching over to a Mk2 headlight assembly) is to paint the black rubber casing around the headlight white. You want to remove the rubber piece and remove the glass as well from the plastic frame and clean it really good with a degreasing cleaner, followed by a rinse with rubbing alcohol. Now get yourself a can of cheap gloss white enamal paint and give it a good coat or two. While you are waiting for the paint to dry, head to your local Wally World and buy yourself a 9004 (I think) Sylvania Silverstar or GE Nighthawk High Intensity halogen bulb. The biggest change in light intensity will be from the white paint. Last time I checked, white reflects the full spectrum of light whereas black absorbs it...
mtman Posted November 3, 2008 #6 Posted November 3, 2008 Any H4 9003 HB2 60/55w light will fit. I just got some of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/H4-9003-HB2-4500K-HID-SUPER-WHITE-XENON-HEAD-LIGHT-BULB_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ36476QQihZ017QQitemZ270295864551QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW and they work fine. Brightness is based on temperature and you want 4000k to 5000k.
sefner Posted November 3, 2008 Author #7 Posted November 3, 2008 Thanks everyone. Just the info I was looking for. You can never have too much light at night.
bongobobny Posted November 3, 2008 #8 Posted November 3, 2008 9003, I stand corrected. It would have been obvious as I think the 9004's have a 90 degree base...
skydoc_17 Posted November 3, 2008 #9 Posted November 3, 2008 I just wanted to throw in that any headlight bulb you buy NEEDS to be an H4 rated bulb. A regular 9003 automotive headlight bulb will fail prematurely due to vibration. The H4 bulbs have the larger diameter filament and will withstand the vibration of a motorcycle much better. Ride Safe, Earl
Saddle_Bag Posted November 3, 2008 #10 Posted November 3, 2008 Has anyone had an issue with too much heat in there and wires and insulation melting??????I had a headlight plug begin to melt and I'm notsure whick headlight bulb might have done it. joe
91nwl Posted November 3, 2008 #11 Posted November 3, 2008 I recently installed a Sylvania Silver Star. Very big improvement over my stock bulb. It was about $17 at Autozone. There's a thread in here with the part number.
Venturous Randy Posted November 4, 2008 #12 Posted November 4, 2008 I recently installed a Sylvania Silver Star. Very big improvement over my stock bulb. It was about $17 at Autozone. There's a thread in here with the part number. I tried the Silver Star on my bike and my cars. It was an improvement, but I found them to have a short life in all the vehicles. I ended up putting a PIAA bulb in my bike and I had already upgraded from the MKI to the MKII system and that was a great improvement. RandyA
