rcbufalino Posted October 30, 2008 #1 Posted October 30, 2008 I just solved one problem, here comes another. 99 Venture Royal Star, replaced faulty ignition switch, corrected problem. Now, with the motor running and in neutral, if I place the sidestand down the motor stops. If the clutch lever or the sidestand is in any position, as long as the bike is in neutral no problem.
ddoggma Posted October 30, 2008 #2 Posted October 30, 2008 Thats how it works. It's a safety feature.
sarges46 Posted October 30, 2008 #3 Posted October 30, 2008 Sorry Dog but it should run while in neutral with the kickstand down. Give that switch a cleaning treatment of some sort to start I guess and check the wires to it to make sure they arent shorting or something.
BoomerCPO Posted October 30, 2008 #4 Posted October 30, 2008 Now, with the motor running and in neutral, if I place the sidestand down the motor stops. The sidestand switch is either gunked up or faulty. If you look at where the switch is located you will see that it is very easy to collect road gunk. A good cleaning with WD-40 or Carb Cleaner should do the trick for you. Doing this cleaning every 2-3 months should prevent this problem from happening at all.
Black Owl Posted October 30, 2008 #5 Posted October 30, 2008 Give that switch a cleaning treatment of some sort to start I guess and check the wires to it to make sure they arent shorting or something. Just follow Sarges46 advise. You can count on it being right... (cuz Marilyn showed him how to do it)
V7Goose Posted October 30, 2008 #6 Posted October 30, 2008 Now, with the motor running and in neutral, if I place the sidestand down the motor stops. If the clutch lever or the sidestand is in any position, as long as the bike is in neutral no problem. You have contradicted yourself. Your first statement is that the bike stops if you put the stand down in neutral; your second statement says no problem if the bike is in neutral. Can't tell you how to troubleshoot it until I know what it is REALLY doing. If it is in gear, the bike will ALWAYS stop when you put the sidestand down - that is normal. Goose
N3FOL Posted October 30, 2008 #7 Posted October 30, 2008 The phenomenon sounds like a normal occurence.
rcbufalino Posted October 30, 2008 Author #8 Posted October 30, 2008 What I meant to say on the last sentance, was if the clutch lever is pull in. Goose
N3FOL Posted October 30, 2008 #9 Posted October 30, 2008 If the clutch lever is 'pulled in' and you are in gear and you put your sidestand down, I believe the engine will cut out.
V7Goose Posted October 31, 2008 #10 Posted October 31, 2008 What I meant to say on the last sentance, was if the clutch lever is pull in. That IS what you said in the last sentence. Simple question: If the bike is in neutral and you put the side stand down, does it run or die? Forget the clutch, that is meaningless. Goose
N3FOL Posted October 31, 2008 #11 Posted October 31, 2008 If you are 'in-Gear' with the 'clutch In' and you put your side stand down (assuming that the engine is running) , the engine will cut-out. I do this as part of my safety check.
V7Goose Posted October 31, 2008 #12 Posted October 31, 2008 N3FOL, you and I keep saying the same things (and we are both right), but we are not getting any meaningful response from the OP. Here is one more simple statement that should help him tell us if he really has a problem: The RSV will ALWAYS run with the side stand down while in neutral; the RSV will NEVER run with the side stand down while in gear. Of course, I am assuming the kill switch is in the "run" position, but the position of the clutch is immaterial. Goose
onefastmx5 Posted November 1, 2008 #13 Posted November 1, 2008 i'd check for a bad cut off relay. i thinks its behind the right side cover under the seat
N3FOL Posted November 1, 2008 #15 Posted November 1, 2008 I hope you re-consider. This is what fun forum discussions is all about. Hope you did some riding this weekend.
Superdave19604 Posted June 11, 2019 #16 Posted June 11, 2019 Yes my 2003 will only start with side stand up. Pain in the butt. I was told possible side stand relay. Allready replaced natural switch.what about this other relay you were talking about? Is there a way to test/check these relays??
sanderjack Posted June 19, 2019 #17 Posted June 19, 2019 There is a relay associated with the Neutral/ kickstand switch. When you get a chance, contact the Diamond Cut Guy and he will probably have a relay to sell you.Yes my 2003 will only start with side stand up. Pain in the butt.
