Dark Wolf Posted October 28, 2008 #1 Posted October 28, 2008 It was about 4:30 this morning when I went to get on my bike to come to work. It was about 35 degrees, when I started it up I noticed the tach was not working. This is a first, as I rode in the tach started responding very slowly. By the time I made the 20 mile ride the tach was acting better but still slow to react. I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen, wondering if the cold had something to do with it. Any thoughts?
Venturous Randy Posted October 28, 2008 #2 Posted October 28, 2008 This does happen occasionally on these 25 year old bikes and it is called in need of lubrication. You need to pull your dash out and put some light oil on the tach moving parts. You also need to take the speedometer out and put some good grease on the bearing at the base of the speedometer where the cable comes thru. I bet you this will solve the tach problem and prevent the dreaded speedometer squeal, which also usually happens more in cooler weather. RandyA

Monty Posted March 24, 2009 #4 Posted March 24, 2009 (edited) I have pretty much the same problem... Cold mornings on the way to work...tach sometimes doesn't work. Other times...tach jumps around sometimes. '83 Venture with electronic tach(no cable). Is it usually just plug connections? I should also mention that when the tach is jumping, the engine is still running fine. No problems with running at all, just the tach. I have also resoldered the connections when I removed the dash and greased the speedo. Edited March 24, 2009 by Monty
