whozleft Posted October 23, 2008 #1 Posted October 23, 2008 Hey all, Can anyone tell me the size of the steering head nut I need to loosen to adjust my steering head? Don's got a great write up in the tech section, but I apparently don't have a large enough open end wrench and I don't want to use channel locks and risk messing up the bolt head. Thanks for the help.
SaltyDawg Posted October 23, 2008 #2 Posted October 23, 2008 I use a 1 1/16 inch wrench. What ever that equates to in Metric. I think it's 27mm but I may be wrong. I do know the above wrench fits without a problem though.
got2mnytoys Posted October 23, 2008 #3 Posted October 23, 2008 I found it to be adjustable wrench size with a rag when I done mine ,had to do a little on one side then turn it to the other side and do a little turn there
hayes Posted October 24, 2008 #4 Posted October 24, 2008 I used a 1 1/6" socket to remove the chrome nut to remove the triple tree and a pair of channel locks to tighten the steering head. I hope this is what you were asking about.
FutureVentures Posted October 24, 2008 #5 Posted October 24, 2008 After 3 trips in/out of Menards, I confirmed and purchased, then used a 27mm. Not cheap either.
SaltyDawg Posted October 25, 2008 #6 Posted October 25, 2008 I used a 1 1/6" socket to remove the chrome nut to remove the triple tree and a pair of channel locks to tighten the steering head. I hope this is what you were asking about. How did you get a socket on there without taking the triple tree apart? Plus are you sure about 1 1/6" socket?
ahoutzer Posted October 25, 2008 #7 Posted October 25, 2008 I put a rag over it and grip it with a set of vise-grips.
flb_78 Posted October 25, 2008 #8 Posted October 25, 2008 27mm or 1 1/16. Either will work. There's only .0004 of an inch difference between the 2.
hayes Posted October 25, 2008 #9 Posted October 25, 2008 Wayne-I had the fairing and the handle bars off lowering the front end. Because of this I already had the triple tree off. Dennis
whozleft Posted October 25, 2008 Author #10 Posted October 25, 2008 Thanks for all the info. I will do some wrench shopping this weekend.
