rayzar52 Posted October 19, 2008 #1 Posted October 19, 2008 Has any one els had a problem with the kickstand safety switch going on when they were running down the road? If so how can this be fixed , not a good feeling when motor shuts down because of it. HELP:detective:
bongobobny Posted October 19, 2008 #2 Posted October 19, 2008 Replace the switch! They are still available for around 50 bucks. Don't waste your time with another used switch like I did as now I have to replace it again. There are 2 sets of contacts and a common ground on the switch. One set of contacts controls the ignition and the other set lights up the display on the dash.
Skid Posted October 19, 2008 #3 Posted October 19, 2008 Mine acted up one time and I took some carb cleaner and sprayed it down. The location of the switch will build up a little grease and dirt after several years and cleaning might fix your problem....
rayzar52 Posted October 20, 2008 Author #4 Posted October 20, 2008 Thanks for the advice will try the cleaning first Thank guys
84xj1100 Posted March 10, 2009 #5 Posted March 10, 2009 Razer, How'd you ever make out with your switch??? FYI My Maxim 1100 has the same switch. Being a bit of a "how does it work" kidda guy, I rebuilt the switch. During the rebuild it's easy to see how problems can occur....mostly moisture gets into the spring loaded plunger and rusts it away, rendering the switch useless. The rebuild wasn't hard and if you're interested I could walk you through it. Ed :Venture:82&84 Maxim 1100 86 Venture
TexasFlyer Posted March 11, 2009 #6 Posted March 11, 2009 My most recent issue with the switch was freezing - the grease, when cold, just would NOT let the switch release. Sitting overnight in the cold, jump on in the morning, flip up the kickstand and --- no go --- sometimes would release after a few minutes. Put it in neutral and it would start fine, click down into first and it would die because the computer thought the kickstand was still down. No fun. Bypassed. Then I started off one day with the kickstand down and almost dumped the bike on my first left turn. No fun. My new switch will be delivered this week.
