Dano Posted October 18, 2008 Share #1 Posted October 18, 2008 After 15-1/2 years, sadly I had my German Shepard Max put down this morning......... Poor old guy had just gotten too bad with his hips and health for him to be comfortable any more. It was with a very heavy heart that this was done. But I know it was for the right reasons, still doesn't make it any easier. Had to do the same with his mom about 4 years ago. This time tho, no family with me, alone to "take care of it". The pet lies there barely able to move, looking at you, trusting you knowing you'll take care of it. And you gotta put 'em down. Very tough. Our latest was we had to bury our cat that had been with me for thirteen years. My wife has been with me for ten in comparison. She had never known me without the cat. It was not a pleasant evening. Get another one soon if you can. The last time I waited too long and feel I wasted time, that could have been spent with a dog around. My new dogs the same breed as my last and he is great. It's amazing how much these 4 legged creatures become a part of our lives. Time heals all wounds, but yes I too get misty-eyed when thinking of my buddies. They all visit me in my dreams from time to time and I always wake up with a tear in my eye and a smile on my face when that happens. saddlebum Posted October 19, 2008 Share #10 Posted October 19, 2008 I too feel for your loss . have had to do it maney times myself including a horse i had for 20 years. the problem there was he was healthy and strongbut broke a front leg in a gopher hole. I once read a poem called the final kind act which i found really helped to put things in perspective. A lot of us keep a suffering animal alive for our own benifit not theres and the poem makes you relize you have to do what must be done for there sake not ours. Mean Dog Posted October 19, 2008 Share #11 Posted October 19, 2008 Know the pain also. This time I got one after Mean Dog passed away. Prettiest dog. The only thing is work 8 hrs. Tippy is an inside pet (cocker spaniel). I don't have a fenced in yard so when I let him out he wants to chase after cars and get in the road. If I chain him up he waits to come back in to do his business. If he gets to run does it outside. Decided to let a good friend I work with take him. She has a fenced in yard and other dogs that are inside also. Tippy has been a lot of comfort for me though. My friend lives about 2 to 3 miles from the house so I can go visit. One was a German Shepard like Max and the other was a Weimerauner. I got elected to do the "duty" and take them to the Vet. Not ashamed to say I shed tears for both of them. Hang in there. And yes it saddens us tremendously when the "time" comes. We truly have lost a part of out family, and will often reflect on the good times we enjoyed with that member. We have 2 elderly cats, one is 19½ years old and the other is 17 years old, so yes I do understand the feelings. We know their "time" is near also. I too have had animals that have had to be put down for their suffering. My parents Beagle was almost 18 years old when my Dad had to put her down. She had arthritis so bad in her hips that she couldn't walk. I have only seen my Dad cry twice in my life, and that was one of them, I felt so bad for him as his heart was broken. Funny thing is, he went hunting for bunnies on a winter day a few years back. Out of the woods comes this little cat, right up to him from out of nowhere and obviously living on it's wits in the cold. It followed him all the way home and came into the house. Now my Dad has never been a cat person, so he was going to try and find it a good home. When the 1st person came to see it, it ran and hid in an area that he couldn't get to it....the cat now lives with my parents and I swear, that it IS my Dad's Beagle Freeway. It acts just like the old girl, and it makes my Dad happy. So as 1 door closes....another may open in the area you least expect it my friend. Max was my best buddy, and we never had any problems or anything "missing" while he stood watch. Squidley, Leadwolf 56 and their Nav's got to see him when they passed through, never a kinder, gentler beast around. We will sorely miss him for a long time. May get another, but probably spring time and then we'll check the pounds and find the one we're meant to have.
