Dano Posted October 18, 2008 #1 Posted October 18, 2008 After 15-1/2 years, sadly I had my German Shepard Max put down this morning......... Poor old guy had just gotten too bad with his hips and health for him to be comfortable any more. It was with a very heavy heart that this was done. But I know it was for the right reasons, still doesn't make it any easier. Had to do the same with his mom about 4 years ago. This time tho, no family with me, alone to "take care of it". Gonna be a rough few days. Also gonna be a little quiet around here for awhile. Thanks for listening, Dan
Condor Posted October 18, 2008 #2 Posted October 18, 2008 I understand where you're coming from Dan. I had to put my G.Shepperd Shane down after 14 years. He was my Bud. Still get weepy even thinking about him. Can't handle another dog....
pegscraper Posted October 18, 2008 #3 Posted October 18, 2008 Been there, had to do that before myself. Hardest thing I think I've ever had to do. The pet lies there barely able to move, looking at you, trusting you knowing you'll take care of it. And you gotta put 'em down. Very tough. Our latest was we had to bury our cat that had been with me for thirteen years. My wife has been with me for ten in comparison. She had never known me without the cat. It was not a pleasant evening. The house is a little quieter without our cat around. Nobody tries to jump up here and get on my keyboard anymore as I type.
mtman Posted October 18, 2008 #4 Posted October 18, 2008 Man, I really do feel for ya. Had to do the same with my shepard "Bear" for the same reasons. Still have his picture by my 'puter. I can't believe how hard this is to write... I know they are without pain now. Take care Dan...

ddoggma Posted October 18, 2008 #6 Posted October 18, 2008 Sorry bud, The pain of putting the dog down after so many years of good times is great. I know and feel your pain. Get another one soon if you can. The last time I waited too long and feel I wasted time, that could have been spent with a dog around. My new dogs the same breed as my last and he is great. So was my last bouvier, and the mutts before them. I like to think I have all my dogs waiting for me when I go.
SaltyDawg Posted October 18, 2008 #7 Posted October 18, 2008 Sorry to hear of your loss. I have been through that 3 times and it doesn't get any easier. It's amazing how much these 4 legged creatures become a part of our lives. Time heals all wounds, but yes I too get misty-eyed when thinking of my buddies. They all visit me in my dreams from time to time and I always wake up with a tear in my eye and a smile on my face when that happens. I still miss my Chow Chow's snoring, and she has been gone for 16 years. It will get better over time.
Dano Posted October 18, 2008 Author #8 Posted October 18, 2008 Thanks guys, I really appreciate your words.
Ozark Posted October 19, 2008 #9 Posted October 19, 2008 Sorry to hear of your loss Dan. It's amazing how much a part of the family they can become, especially after fifteeen years. People who have never had pets will never understand the hole they leave behind when they are gone.
saddlebum Posted October 19, 2008 #10 Posted October 19, 2008 I too feel for your loss . have had to do it maney times myself including a horse i had for 20 years. the problem there was he was healthy and strongbut broke a front leg in a gopher hole. I once read a poem called the final kind act which i found really helped to put things in perspective. A lot of us keep a suffering animal alive for our own benifit not theres and the poem makes you relize you have to do what must be done for there sake not ours.
Mean Dog Posted October 19, 2008 #11 Posted October 19, 2008 Know the pain also. This time I got one after Mean Dog passed away. Prettiest dog. The only thing is work 8 hrs. Tippy is an inside pet (cocker spaniel). I don't have a fenced in yard so when I let him out he wants to chase after cars and get in the road. If I chain him up he waits to come back in to do his business. If he gets to run does it outside. Decided to let a good friend I work with take him. She has a fenced in yard and other dogs that are inside also. Tippy has been a lot of comfort for me though. My friend lives about 2 to 3 miles from the house so I can go visit. Also, Emily and I work in the same department and get off at the same time. Makes it nice.
sarges46 Posted October 19, 2008 #12 Posted October 19, 2008 Its always sad when we loose our true friends....our critters become family and are missed greatly. Sorry for your loss.
VTirelli Posted October 20, 2008 #13 Posted October 20, 2008 Sorry Dan, I know how you feel. I don't even want to think what I'll do when it's time for my Bulldog Elvis to go. Hopefully we have a long time together. Maybe that's why I have my parrots. They should outlive me.....and I won't have to deal with it.
BradT Posted October 20, 2008 #14 Posted October 20, 2008 Sorry for your loss. I just hope I do not have to make that call with Ben. Ben is almost 9 yrs old and the normal life span is 8-10 yrs. But doing pretty well, so far. BRad
Mariner Fan Posted October 20, 2008 #15 Posted October 20, 2008 Sorry to hear about this Dan. We lost both our dogs last year and they were 14 years old. One was a German Shepard like Max and the other was a Weimerauner. I got elected to do the "duty" and take them to the Vet. Not ashamed to say I shed tears for both of them. Hang in there. Bob
rosebud Posted October 20, 2008 #16 Posted October 20, 2008 Sorry to hear about your dog, it's always hard to lose a part of your family, and after so may years are a part of your family. We had to put our dalmatian down a few years ago we had had her 14 years. It's never easy. Our thoughts are with you this weekend.
Snarley Bill Posted October 20, 2008 #17 Posted October 20, 2008 dan, so sorry to hear that, like i said in another post, my puppy is my kid. dread the day he gets old. bill
Bob Myers Posted October 20, 2008 #18 Posted October 20, 2008 We bring these little animals into our house and heart with the unwritten promise to take care of them for their whole life. And yes it saddens us tremendously when the "time" comes. We truly have lost a part of out family, and will often reflect on the good times we enjoyed with that member. We have 2 elderly cats, one is 19½ years old and the other is 17 years old, so yes I do understand the feelings. We know their "time" is near also. AS said another pup would help to ease the burden for most people.
Iowawegian Posted October 20, 2008 #19 Posted October 20, 2008 Just to let you know I'm thinking of you and knowing it's not an easy time.
brscooter Posted October 20, 2008 #20 Posted October 20, 2008 Sorry about your loss. Pal. I have to do the same several times in the last few years and it hurts. I love my dogs more than I love most people. They don't complain and are happy to see me when I walk in the door. What better love is there. Lyle
Squidley Posted October 20, 2008 #21 Posted October 20, 2008 DanO, Thanks for sharing quite an intimate part of your life here. I too have had animals that have had to be put down for their suffering. My parents Beagle was almost 18 years old when my Dad had to put her down. She had arthritis so bad in her hips that she couldn't walk. I have only seen my Dad cry twice in my life, and that was one of them, I felt so bad for him as his heart was broken. Funny thing is, he went hunting for bunnies on a winter day a few years back. Out of the woods comes this little cat, right up to him from out of nowhere and obviously living on it's wits in the cold. It followed him all the way home and came into the house. Now my Dad has never been a cat person, so he was going to try and find it a good home. When the 1st person came to see it, it ran and hid in an area that he couldn't get to it....the cat now lives with my parents and I swear, that it IS my Dad's Beagle Freeway. It acts just like the old girl, and it makes my Dad happy. So as 1 door closes....another may open in the area you least expect it my friend. BTW.... if you scratch me just right I may have that jumpy leg twitch

Dano Posted October 21, 2008 Author #23 Posted October 21, 2008 Once again folks, I appreciate the kind words and remembrances you have written here. Max was my best buddy, and we never had any problems or anything "missing" while he stood watch. Squidley, Leadwolf 56 and their Nav's got to see him when they passed through, never a kinder, gentler beast around. We will sorely miss him for a long time. May get another, but probably spring time and then we'll check the pounds and find the one we're meant to have. Once again, from the bottom of my heart, Thank You Dan
Dano Posted October 21, 2008 Author #24 Posted October 21, 2008 PS---- by the way Brad, I forget, is it the left ear or the right ear you like scratched the most???????? LOL Dan
Squidley Posted October 21, 2008 #25 Posted October 21, 2008 PS---- by the way Brad, I forget, is it the left ear or the right ear you like scratched the most???????? LOL Dan Matter of fact, both of them work equally
