Freebird Posted October 17, 2008 Author #26 Posted October 17, 2008 Well...my motorcycle is with Progressive but my home owners and auto are with State Farm and have been for about 12 years. I talked to them this morning and when they gave me the quote, it was HIGH. Higher by several hundred dollars than several other companies. I told them that I would be canceling my policy with them in a few days. I later got a call back that they have something called "Steer Clear" that will result in a discount. My son has to watch a DVD and then take a test. Then he has to meet with the agent. The discount is pretty good and puts them on par with the others. So, looks like I may stay with them. My son does have a car but he doesn't know it yet. It is a nice but older Ford Taurus and is paid for. I will check into putting just liability on it and listing him on it only. Sound like if I list him on our cars though that with the "Steer Clear" discount, I'm only looking at an increase of about $700.00 per year. I can live with that. I'm currently paying about $700.00 per year for full coverage with maximum coverage for liability, uninsured, underinsured, etc. I presently have $250 deductible for comprehensive and $1,000.00 for collision. If I keep the same coverage it will go up to about $1400.00 per year. I am carrying $250,000/$500,000 on liability and property damage and think I will keep that where it is.
Marcarl Posted October 18, 2008 #27 Posted October 18, 2008 I'm a bit of a hard nose when it comes to my kids. All of them got told,,, if you want to drive that's fine, you pay the insurance and gas, and if you get a ticket or accident you also get to buy your own car at that point. Then I sat them down on a one to one and told them point blank that I really didn't care if they got into an accident and killed themselves,,,, well I would feel very hurt of course,, be something else without them around,,,, have to deal with the mourning issue and the missing of love thing,, and all that, but besides that,, no,,, if they died that would be that,,,,,BUT, what were the chances of them dieing I asked them,,,,,, not so good,,, but the chances of ending up in a wheel chair for the rest of their lives was very good... This had a very sobering effect on each of them, and so far they have all been blessed with good driving records,,, not perfect, but then neither are their dad or mom so we just discovered. Our oldest is now 38 and the youngest is 26 with the other 4 in between somewhere.
eagleeye Posted October 18, 2008 #28 Posted October 18, 2008 Don Try AAA, and see what you come up with. I did that when my son turned 16 and saved a bunch of $ Did switch over my home owners also, still saved. Steve
flb_78 Posted October 18, 2008 #29 Posted October 18, 2008 My parent's bought me my first car. A '77 Olds Delta 88 with a deer print in the front end ($75). It was 18 years old already. They also paid for my first 3 months of liability insurance on my own policy ($175). After that, I was on my own. I also got my first job that day so I could buy gas so I could drive to school and work.
skydoc_17 Posted October 18, 2008 #30 Posted October 18, 2008 Jean and I have 4 sons and 1 daughter. NONE of them got their drivers licenses until they were 18 years old! They ALL have their own policies, We did buy more than a few "a little better than a beater" cars for them but the Insurance and gas is paid for by them. Our three oldest sons have purchased newer cars/trucks/motorcycles and the youngest son and daughter are still driving the "beater" cars we bought for them. Their driving records weather good or bad did not affect our insurance one bit. And there has been a few times when our youngest son has had to park the car because he didn't have gas money. I have Erie Ins. on the Nissan Maxima and my S15 Jimmy and Progressive Ins. on the 87' VR, Full Coverage on the Nissan and VR and libility only on the S15 Jimmy and I pay $403.00 per year. I help my sons repair their cars/trucks/motorcycles and I do all the repairs on my daughter's car. I don't buy parts! I know this sounds like tough love but IMHO it's hard to have respect for something you don't pay for! By the way, the oldest son got off to a shaky start but after he got his first ticket and got the bill, he figured it out real quick! the rest of the crew have spotless driving records and pay accordingly. I have one son that regularly takes his motorcycle to the drag strip and my second oldest takes his v-tec honda civic pylon racing but they leave their "Need for speed" on the track. Just my 2 cents, Earl and Jean

Nothings changed, just better class of crooks.
