Naked Rider Posted October 9, 2008 #1 Posted October 9, 2008 what if any do you carry in a road side kit i.e tire patch, flairs, hand pump, fuel line, spark pluk stuff like that just courious on what i might need out on the road one day. the reason i am asking is the other day on a ride we had no cell phone coverage where we were at and i only seen three cars the whole stretch of road i was on passed and passed a couple of houses so that got me thinking about this problem.
GeorgeS Posted October 9, 2008 #2 Posted October 9, 2008 Dealing with a flat tire would probable be the #1 item on such a list. Tire plugging kit of some kind, and CO-2 cartridges, or a battery operated Air Pump of some kind. Also, product called " ride - on " puncture sealer. ( it works ) I always carry a volt/ohm meter for electrical troublshooting. Spare fuses. Spark plugs. Spare headlight bulb. I consider these item's as basic.
RedRider Posted October 9, 2008 #3 Posted October 9, 2008 I carry a nylon technicians bag with a bunch of stuff in it. Specifically, 1) ball end metric hex wrench set 2) 1/4" drive w/ metric sockets up to 12 mm and short extension 3) Tire plug kit 4) Small Walmart 12Vdc air compressor 5) Several tie wraps in various lengths 6) Small bottle blue Loctite 7) Small needle nose pliers 8) Linesman Pliers 9) Short roll of duct tape - flattened 10) electrical tape 11) extra headlight bulb 12) extra brake light bulb 13) Never carry an item 13 14) About 10 ft of 20 guage wire 15) Velcro wraps/straps 16) Small roll double sided tape 17) Set of metric wrenches 18) Small tube dielectric grease 19) small bag with extra metric bolts, nuts, washers, fuses, etc. 20) Inexpensive voltmeter 21) Small ball peen hammer with the handle shortened. 22) Small cresent wrench 23) Flat blade screwdriver 24) #1 phillips screwdriver 25) Couple of mechanic's picks I also carry at least one Leatherman. It fits nicely between the latches of the saddle bag. This sounds like a lot, but it is fairly compact. I can move it between bikes (also have a KLR650) and only need to change the bulb selections and add tire irons and tools to remove the wheels. Don't think I will ever try to remove the wheels on the Venture while on the road. RR
KiteSquid Posted October 9, 2008 #4 Posted October 9, 2008 I would add a rellay bright LED headlamp. The type that goes on your head insted of a flashlihgt to free up your hands and the lihgt goes where you need it, not where your helper points it. I recomend the one from River Rock at Target for about $25 It is also sold as the Rayovac High Beam™ K2 LED Headlight

There is a small MagLight in my kit also. That must have been the mystery #13 item. RR
ToRide1 Posted March 24, 2009 #6 Posted March 24, 2009 This is an old thread but has anyone tried the tool kits from Jc Whitney! The 05 venture I got last year the factory supplied tool kit is gone and I need something to cover all basics. So any with experience with their kit are they worth the money or just keep looking.
timgray Posted March 24, 2009 #7 Posted March 24, 2009 One thing I learned over the years from cage driving and Bike riding... If you build a kit for your bike, USE IT to maintain your bike. If you hate the tools in it when you are siting at home, then you will be throwing them when you are on the side of the road in rain at midnight. Make sure it has the tools that are needed and work well for you. I took out my Yamaha Kit and replaced all the wrenches with box end wrenches that ratchet and made a kit that is a joy to use and still has everything needed to completely work on the bike while being small. Instead of a spare set of plugs I have some emery paper and a plug gapper in there with 1 spare spark plug. I have yet to see a sparkplug completely fail on the road that cant be made to work with some emery paper and a gapper. Remember you only need to limp it another ~250 miles to a real service location not completely repair the bike for the rest of your 4800 mile road trip. Bulbs I dont carry because the headlight wont kill both elements at once and we havea Reserve lighting unit. Tail will run with only one bulb. I have many of the above items but a couple of "wierd ones" 1 ball of rubber putty in a baggie. it's great for plugging a leak and then covering with duct tape. I fixed a radiator hose with that on a 102 degree day and it was spraying coolant all over the place. 1 - 3" long stick of epoxy putty in a baggie. Sometimes you gotta glue something and it's the only solution you can figure out. This is typically a last resort as that stuff is a pain to remove. 1 - small hammer. That's to beat the @#%!$## $^@%^ @#$@#$ on the !@#$@# %@## bike. 1 - backpackers 1 gallon colllapsable/folding jug. Being able to get water for you or your bike is a good thing. Hoofing it for 2 miles carrying water in a pair of ziplocks over and over is not fun at all. Finding a small leak in one of those ziplocks makes it even more not fun. I used to be able to find "motorcycle flares", they are 1/2 the length of a regular flare but I have not been able to find them for a few years now. I know the ones in my kit are dead, 3 years old. Replace your flares!
KAWoodworth Posted March 24, 2009 #8 Posted March 24, 2009 I pretty much have some tools and a tire plug kit, but after reading this post I may add a few things. After RiderDuke's ignition switch went out on the way to the NC Meet & Eat at Deadwood, I think a toggle switch and wire would be a great idea too. When I bought my 2007 it didn't come with a tool kit so the dealer ordered me one. I was changing my spark plugs this weekend and didn't have a single socket that was thin enough to fit. I just happened to look in the tool kit that comes with the bike and low and behold there is a spark plug socket, it sure save me a lot of trouble. I wouldn't even know where to buy a thiner walled socket.

Monty Posted March 24, 2009 #10 Posted March 24, 2009 In addition to the tools and such, I also carry... A full medical kit. Small fire extinguisher. Sorry, all of the years as a medic and firefighter have taught me to be prepared. I've used the medical kit a few times on other riders after they went down.
ToRide1 Posted March 24, 2009 #11 Posted March 24, 2009 Tools I have and I can't have enough of them and I can spend $200+ building a kit but some times its cheeper to buy a kit just for the job. Now many have seen hand tools made so cheep that the wenches bend when you use them and thats what I want to avoid. So has anyone seen or have any of these Tool Kits that Companies Like Jc Witney sell?
Mariner Fan Posted March 24, 2009 #12 Posted March 24, 2009 Man, other than the factory kit and a mini mag light, I have nothing!
