I have a 89 and yesterday it began to make a serious whine from seemingly the rear end when I ease of the throttle and the bile is down. No noise when standing at idle. It almost sounds like my tire was going flat but this is not the case. Just got the bike early this summer and really like it as opposed to the wngs I have traditionally ridden so I hope this is something I can get a handle on! Thanks for any help you could provide,

GeorgeS Posted October 9, 2008 #3 Posted October 9, 2008 Drain out whatever is in the rear pumpkin, check for metal shaveings. Replace the SAE - 90, then see what you have. Also, these bike, do make a whinning sound from the Transmission on decelleration. Mine is very noticable at slow speeds driving around in the 30 to 40 MPH speed range. Its, been that way since it was New. No, worse, no better. I just ignor it. Also, you might want to pull the rear wheel, and check the Two Wheel Bearings. Also, if you pull the rear wheel, take the Pumpkin off, and pull out the Drive shaft. and hand greese the Spline, on the forward end of the shaft. ( there is no other way to lube the spline !!! )
Guest vgiman Posted October 9, 2008 #4 Posted October 9, 2008 This is sort of what I thought but i wasn't sure if there were any idiosyncrasies for this bike. I will drain and refill the rear. I have not done this before even on my wings of the past. I hope to have a good report for you all in a day or two. If you have any pearls of wisdom regarding draining the pumpkin, please let me know. hopefully i will be on the road by Friday!
saddlebum Posted October 9, 2008 #5 Posted October 9, 2008 If you do find metal in the pumpkin and/or pull it even to just lube the drive shaft spline check to see that the the threaded end on pinion shft has not snapped off. it will be easy to see because the pinion nut with the broken threaded piece will be loose. the bike still drives if this happens but the pinion will float in and out varing the backlash and causing a whine. (this is worst case senerio but worth checking you do not need to disassemble the pumpkin to check this just look into the housing when you pop the drive shaft out to lube the spline, the nut may even just fall out when you pull the shaft if not it is likly ok)

This had been a problem on some of these differentials. RandyA
mbrood Posted October 9, 2008 #7 Posted October 9, 2008 Nobody suggested that he just ask her to get off? Couldn't he put it on the center stand, start it, put it in 1st and "gently" roll on and off the throttle and listen?

That nut keeps the preload on the bearing. The inner race is 2 pieces and they will start to work apart, causing the bearing to fail. Mine was quiet under acceleration but quite noisy with engine braking. Once it started it got worse fast.
Guest vgiman Posted October 11, 2008 #10 Posted October 11, 2008 I believe the worst is being realized in my case as there were particles in the gear oil and after I changed it, the whine persisted and is steadily getting worse. I would be grateful for any wisdom regarding rectifying the situation. I have never removed a pumpkin and or drive shaft and i am concerned that parts may not be available once I do. Any pearls of wisdom are greatly appreciated!
MiCarl Posted October 12, 2008 #11 Posted October 12, 2008 Getting the final drive off is quite easy. Just remove the rear wheel, then the 4 nuts that hold the final drive onto the swingarm. Just pull straight back on it and it should slide out. If the end on the pinion is good the driveshaft will in all likelihood come with it. Parts are still available new. The ring and pinion however are only available by purchasing the entire final drive assembly. $900 or so. In my case I lucked into the final from a 99 that had been triked. I got a rearend with 900 miles on it for free. It is, however, not an exact replacement. The hole for the speed sensor had to be plugged. Somewhere it is about 1/4" thinner, so the rear wheel gets shifted 1/4" to the left. Gear ratio is the same as the 1st gen.

Also, for Ref: I believe the Pumpkins from EARLY Years of the V-Max, will also work. ( Check with Rick Butler for parts that you may or might need ) If that becomes necessary. As to metal shaveings, in the drained out oil. There will always be some evidence . ie. very fine particles evident in the oil, that is not usually a problem . However if you could actually identify something as a chunk of metal thats a different story. How many miles is on this bike? Under 50K, probably no real problem ---- Over 80K , well then " Maby " Another approach, is after replaceing the Oil, run it for maby 500 to 1000 miles, then drain the oil again, into a CLEAN CONTAINER, and then "Strain it " thru Cheese Cloth. For a better identification of any types of metal shaveings. Let us know what transpires

( there is no other way to lube the spline !!! ) I thoght I remember reading that the whine in the transmission is due to square cut gears.My bike has whined since we got it too....
timgray Posted October 13, 2008 #14 Posted October 13, 2008 Most yamaha's with the larger engines make that whine. A Vmax I was riding with made the same whine as my bike. I though it was a trademark Yamaha sound.
