timgray Posted October 6, 2008 #1 Posted October 6, 2008 Ive heard that Mobil1 15W50 is perfectly fine for motorcycle use with wet clutch. is this right? does anyone here use it? I'd like to switch to a synthetic for less than the overpriced yamalube.
lonestarmedic Posted October 6, 2008 #2 Posted October 6, 2008 I have been using Mobil 1 15W50 for a bit over a year on this bike (1986 VR) with no problems. Clutch is fine. In the summer heat of Texas, I think the bike has run a bit cooler. There aren't any additives for friction. The new bottle of 15W50 has a different cap. It used to be a red screw top. This signified the lack of additives. However, the stuff inside is the same. JB
bikenut Posted October 6, 2008 #3 Posted October 6, 2008 If I were you I would not run any oil unless it is to be used in a motorcycle with a wet clutch. The 15 w50 states on they site it is to be used in cars, trucks & SUV. It does not state anything about moptorcycles. Motorcycle oil had additives in it for the wet clutch and other things. Why do you think they make motorcycle oil and car & truck oil. DO what you want but I only run motorcycle oil in all of my bikes. By the way Mobil make a motorcycle oil just for bikes
GeorgeS Posted October 6, 2008 #4 Posted October 6, 2008 Been useing it for 5 years in both bikes, ( M -1, 15W-50W ) No problems either bike. Been useing their 10W-30W in both cars for 10 years, no problems.
Venturous Randy Posted October 6, 2008 #5 Posted October 6, 2008 I have used Valvoline 10-40 for years with no problems. RandyA
Kurt Posted October 7, 2008 #6 Posted October 7, 2008 Mobil 1 formulation has been changed in the last year or so. The way I know this is that Exmark recommended it for their hydrostatic drives on the mowers. After the formulation change it is no longer recommended for that application. I will stick to Cenex diesel oil in my 90. I put Mobil 1 in an 82 Maxim and it started leaking. I would stick to non-sythetics in an older bike due to the chance of leaking seals and gaskets. I also change oil and filter at 1000-1500 miles which some will say is more often than needed. Just me tho.
bobcat Posted October 7, 2008 #7 Posted October 7, 2008 I've used Castrol GTX for over 25 years in all my vehicles...I use 20/50 wt in my motorcycles and change oil at 2K..I've never had a oil related issue in any vehicle..Also, I add about 1/3 can of STP with oil change in the motorcycles.. I guess we all have different taste with tires, oil, women, booze etc..makes things interesting.....
footsie Posted October 7, 2008 #8 Posted October 7, 2008 HAVE BEEN USING MOBIL ONE IN MY 1997 VALKYRIE SINCE IT WAS NEW, CHANGE EVERY 5000, NO PROBLEMS. My friend Bobby ran a 1999 magna 60,000, same oil change interval, no problems. Gregg
kf_sk_mccall Posted October 8, 2008 #9 Posted October 8, 2008 I have a 1990 Venture Royale equipped with a Champion Escort sidecar and have used Mobil 1 15w50 (automotive) in it since I purchased it in 2001 with 19,000 miles. The bike now has 120,000 miles and still the original clutch. Ken
