Rear end gearbox

I was wondering if it's ok to use a synthetic automotive oil in the rear end gearbox?

 

prepping for winter storage, I want to get as much service done now as possible because I know I wont have the willpower to do it in the spring when it get's warm enough to ride.

 

Can I use a syncromesh synthetic or a typical 90W synthetic gearbox oil back there?

I would think sythentic would be fine. Stick with the 90 weight though me thinks.

I just put Amsoil Severe Gear 75-90 in my '86. It works great. Do not use automotive engine oil in it!

I have used synthetic gear oil in my 83 for several years and it seems to do fine. I check the level occasionally and it does not appear to have leaked any. At least 1,500 miles of this was pulling a 450 pound camper.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic for cars and have for many years. I've never had a problem with it.

Does the Mobile 1 synthetic come with any friction modifiers???

I don't know. We are talking about rear drives here, not motor oil. I use Mobil 1 for MOTORCYCLES in the engine.

I know we're talking finals here, but friction is friction no matter where it occurs, and the modifiers might be a good thing.... Just wondering.???
