CrazyHorse Posted October 2, 2008 #1 Posted October 2, 2008 Anyone know what a failing clutch bearing sounds like. I'm getting a whirring type sound while riding that goes away when I pull the clutch in. ANy ideas
93 venture Posted October 2, 2008 #3 Posted October 2, 2008 Are you hearing this noise at any rpm range, from about 2800 to 3500 rpms, or between 56 to 65 mph in 5 gear?

Squeeze Posted October 2, 2008 #5 Posted October 2, 2008 I'm willing to bet 10 Bucks, if you place the Bike on the Side Stand with max Pressure in both front and rear Suspension, undo the Clutch Cover, open the six Bolts and take the Clutch pressure Plate off, push the the old Bearing out, press new Bearing in and mount everything back in Place, the Noise will stop. It's a 1 to 1.5 Hours Job, most Time is wasted during scratch the old Gasket off the Cover Surface. The Bearing you will need is a 6003. If you buy a good industrial Brand, Timken, SKF, FAG you will think about replacing it again in 2016 or later.
foxman Posted October 2, 2008 #6 Posted October 2, 2008 Is it easy to get old bearing out? And what about pressing new bearing back on.
Squeeze Posted October 2, 2008 #7 Posted October 2, 2008 Is it easy to get old bearing out? And what about pressing new bearing back on. It's very easy to get the Bearing out. A mechanical Press or an old Drill Press with a Ring underneath will press it out and the new Bearing in at no Time. Of Course you could use the old Hammer and Drift Method, but i refrain from such Actions because the Bearing will get hurt often.
foxman Posted October 2, 2008 #8 Posted October 2, 2008 Thanks, I'll get on that little job this weekend. Hopefully it'll take care of my noise also.
Squeeze Posted October 2, 2008 #9 Posted October 2, 2008 Don't forget to have a new Clutch Cover Gasket at Hands. You probably won't need it when you have one, but you will definately need it badly when you haven't got one prior to dismount the Cover.

I'm really thinking this is it Squeeze I can hear a slight rattle at idle on the side stand and when I push the clutch in it goes away. At speed in gear its an annoying whirring noise. Is the bearing open? Can you describe the way it looks they were asking me at the store. Is it open faced which I;m assuming it is. Thank you for your responses. Jim
Squeeze Posted October 3, 2008 #11 Posted October 3, 2008 Yes, it's an standard open Bearing, must be because it's lubed through the Motoroil.
Condor Posted October 3, 2008 #12 Posted October 3, 2008 Yes, it's an standard open Bearing, must be because it's lubed through the Motoroil. And there's a cup that fits in the center that the rods push against... It's not part of the bearing...
Squeeze Posted October 3, 2008 #13 Posted October 3, 2008 That mushroom shaped Part is the short Push Rod which goes against the Ball.
Condor Posted October 3, 2008 #14 Posted October 3, 2008 That mushroom shaped Part is the short Push Rod which goes against the Ball. I think we're talking about two different things Squeeze. I'm talking about the cup that fits in the center of the throw out bearing that the push rod 'pushes' against to disengage the clutch. Without it there would be no way to actuate the clutch pressure plate. The rod would go right thru the center of the bearing.
Squeeze Posted October 3, 2008 #15 Posted October 3, 2008 I just checked the Parts Catalog. That Cup is a MKI Thing. Since '86 the Rod and the Cup is in one Piece.
Condor Posted October 3, 2008 #16 Posted October 3, 2008 I just checked the Parts Catalog. That Cup is a MKI Thing. Since '86 the Rod and the Cup is in one Piece. So the cup, or pushing surface is actually an intrigal part of the short rod on the MkII's. See...I told you we were talking about two different things.... And you can tell I've never gotten up close and personal with a MkII clutch...
CrazyHorse Posted October 3, 2008 Author #17 Posted October 3, 2008 Since this is bearing talk do you know what the wheel bearing numbers are for the front and back?
Condor Posted October 4, 2008 #18 Posted October 4, 2008 (edited) Since this is bearing talk do you know what the wheel bearing numbers are for the front and back? Axles?? The fronts are 6303 or 303 if they're timkin, the back is 6304/304 on the rotor side. The rear needle bearing is Yamaha only from what I've read. Edited October 4, 2008 by Condor

ANy ideas Funny you post this ,because my bike just started making a squealing noise around 3000 rpm's in all gears..It sounds like a slipping fan belt... It does go away when the clutch is pulled in. My winter project list just keeps getting longer.

Mines kinda a whirring noise while in gear at and moving at all speeds, goes away when clutch pulled in. Now in neutral I pull the clutch in I feel nothing but when I let the clutch out in neutral I can feel like and imbalance probably from the clutch pack I'm suspecting I can feel it through the bike just like its a bad bearing and whatever is not spinning straight but wobbly if you know what I mean. I'm pretty sensitive to the vibrations of the bike I also have solid mounts on the bike too.
