Storminyte Posted September 30, 2008 #1 Posted September 30, 2008 Has anyone ever used or know anything about chargeGUARD which is supposed to help keep your battery charged should you want to run two sets of warm weather gear. I know zip about the electrical system but been told that the Venture doesn't have enough juice to run 2 sets of Gerbings so I was researching and found the chargeGUARD...it sounds too good to be true so before I invest I was hoping I could get knowledge and/or advice from those that know... Thanks in advance.... Dee Ride Safe

Freebird Posted October 1, 2008 #3 Posted October 1, 2008 Well, it will offer you some protection from running your battery down but don't be under the impression that it will give you more wattage to run your gear. The stator will only put out what it is designed to put out. If you draw more from the battery than the stator can replace then you are going to run the battery down. All this thing does is monitors your usage and will shut down your gear if it detects that you are pulling down the battery too much. It will not increase the output.
Guest tx2sturgis Posted October 1, 2008 #4 Posted October 1, 2008 Actually, I think Dee was asking about this one: [/url]http://www.kisantech.com/view_product.php?product=CG-25 It monitors your battery and charging system...so that you can shut off things like vests and driving lites if there is a problem. It doesnt allow you to run any more loads than what the bike will handle. I have one on my bike and it works great. It also has an air temp sensor, so thats an added bonus. I didnt get the unit that has the on-board charger, since I already have a maintainer I use with the bike. Many Venture riders disconnect the carb heaters or put them on a switch, which will save you around 60 watts, which is in the neighborhood of what a heated vest or liner would use. The bike will easily handle a solo riders heated gear, and disconnecting the carb heaters should allow some 'headroom' for hooking up a second set of heated gear. You might look into that possibility. Carb heaters are there to prevent carburetor icing and enhance rideablity in REALLY cold weather. For most of us, its not a problem.
Little Bob Posted October 1, 2008 #5 Posted October 1, 2008 Dee, Check out Buckeye Performce they have upgraded the stator to 50 amps. That will help. Good Luck.:cool10:
Storminyte Posted October 1, 2008 Author #6 Posted October 1, 2008 Thanks for the help...and if I take in all the advice given, it appears that if I want to run 2 sets of heated gear...it would be best to get the chargegard for monitoring purposes as well as a switch for the heated carb and/or an upgraded alternator. Sounds like I have a bit of work to do before winter hits...thanks again everyone.... Dee:big-grin-emoticon:
