how long should a fuel pump run if it disconnected from the carb hose

The 83 has several things a bit different from the rest... but the 84 has a basic 5 second timer when the ignition turns on. Toggle the kill switch and you get another 5 seconds.

 

Once the bike starts, the signal to the #2 coil acts as a "keep alive" for the pump.
