Possible VentureRider podcasts?

So I'm wondering what the possibilities for a VentureRider Podcast might be.

We could record and post a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly podcast on the site, hosting it offsite if need be. ( Anyone with a NAS drive or webhost willing to donate some space?) Topics could include modifications, issues, performance, favorite rides, meetNeats, ride-ins, chatroom audio, moderator interviews, trailering, sidecars, whatever. Maybe even get some site sponsors in on this?

First, we would need permission from Freebird of course, but then, if we could put together some podcasts, would yall listen to them? How about a call-in show? I'd love to interview some of the regulars on here, but podcasts can be produced by almost anyone with the desire and a computer. You could carry along a digital recorder or even a microcassette recorder, and interview each other, or record some audio about your trips, events, or weekend projects. Its easy enough to digitize and store on a server somewhere. I see a diverse bunch of members on here who I'd like to listen to as well as read about.

Ok...built-in audience...guinea pigs, technology...we got it all.

Input, anyone?

Getting my permission is the easy part. You now have it. Unfortunately, that is about the only time I have remaining so you guys will have to put this together if you wish to. I do think it could be fun.

Thank you Don.

I'm thinking we need to recruit some volunteers. If any of you are willing and able to record maybe 15 minutes or less, then feel free. Even a 5 minute recording of a few friends at a local diner. Use whatever you have available, including analog or digital.

A wife could interview a husband, about his riding, his bikes, his hobbies. At a meet-n-eat, you could have a host interview some attendees...where they rode in from, favorite rides, what mods they have done to the bike. It doesnt have to sound professional, just honest and spontaneous...thats more fun to listen to! Try to limit background noise, such as a rock band, but the occasional motorcycle riding by or jet airplane overhead wont hurt anything. Of course, any 'blue' language can be beeped over during editing.

If you need the material edited or digitized, I can do that, or there are probably several members who would like to get in on this. This could be fun!

I dont have the time to do a regular show, but if several members get in on this, we could have a diverse and interesting series of podcasts.

Looking forward to any input or volunteers.

Don, can you make this a sticky thread at least for a week or so?

I think this is a great idea. Sometimes it's hard to get something across when explaining stuff this would make it alot easier to do it.

Might have to make that a secret recording while mechanic is getting her tat. :rotf::rotf:Otherwise she might refrain from her screaming.

Sounds good to me I'll play but not sure about the tech knowledge needed for me to pull it off.

Oh yea by the way tell my Amarillo girl friends that jewelry is made and on the way via usps in the next few days.

Bob...I sent Jennifer a heads-up on text and she replied with her address (boondocks has closed!) which I forwarded to you on text...hope you got it...if not, holler on private email here.

As far as the podcasts, hey, I'd like to interview you about your adventure this summer...man that would be a great podcast...and now I'm looking for a cheap or free podcast hosting service...there are several on the net ....I just have to look them over and see what i want. Most of them, it seems, will host the podcasts, but its like youtube, they want to make them public, and I had in mind more of a limited distribution for members only.

Hmmm....Now..if only there was some server space here....

I really don't know that I have the server space here but I probably have some on a couple of other sites that I own. It really doesn't matter which domain does it?

Brian,

Thanks for the text message on Jenn's address, I got it. It took me a while to get all the pieces made that i had promised on the trip, while getting my real life up to speed in ATL. So please apoligize to the girls for me on the delay. Sorry to hear about Boondock's Hope that doesn't limit your watering hole options too much.

I'd love to podcast about the trip. That would be a lot of fun. I've told the story so many times to my local buddies that I'm getting pretty good with the descriptive embellishments. Just let me know what to do, I'll leave the tech stuff to you since it seems I'm challenged with the on off switch with this thing.

Back here in reallity I miss not being back on the trip and riding and partying with you in Amarillo. I had a blast and Texas was one of the high points of the trip.

Hope to be seing and riding with you soon.

I like the idea. I have done a bunch of short clips for work before. I also think back to the repairs I have done. A short video would work well. How to items. How much space is needed. I have a domain of my own and could expand the space. Probably not terribly expensive. I am doing the steering bearings this weekend. I will try to rig something up to record various steps.

Thanks Don...no, the domain is not important...in fact, if anyone has an NAS drive with a bit of space, that would be fine...but otherwise, we can always host it on the free sites, although they will insert commercials and it will be available to anyone.

Im thinking that audio podcasting is the way I want to proceed, but certainly anyone is welcome (I would assume) to make any kind of audio or video podcast, and youtube is one great place to upload videos. Hosting audio podcasts is easy and doesnt require much storage space, and of course, videos do. Audio podcasts are gaining in popularity, since they are so portable, although most people just listen on their home computer.

Bob, as far as an interview goes...Im thinking I will work on an interface on my land line phone, and then have members call in...(or I can call them) and we could do a call-in show as if it was live radio. I can record and digitize this into simple MP3 files...I've already got all the software to do that part.

In fact I already cut a couple test podcasts, but this was just to get things working and debug all the software and of course, learn what the heck I'm doing!

I also want some of our vendors to possibly start thinking about advertising in the podcasts. This would help defray the costs involved in case we need to start paying for space for the podcasts.

This is not going to be all that difficult, and we just need some content, and place to upload the files. Some of you may own digital cameras or camcorders that will record audio only. Check your cameras manual and see if it will. If so, you can start recording content that you can then upload to me and I can wrap a show around it. If you take pictures, then we can even put together some sort of multimedia file. Again, video is fine, but I personally dont want to get involved in that. It takes a lot of time and diskspace to edit, upload, and store videos. But I'd love to watch video of someones weekend project or their ride to the mountains on youtube.

And hey Bob...thanks for the kudos...you made it a fun weekend for us too! Yep...Boondocks closed, about a week after you left...it is up for sale, so we will see if anyone is dum....ooops...I mean brave enough to buy it!

I think it would be cool to do video of work and repairs in progress would probably be more informative then still shot pictures in articles. Maybe there is a video expert that would like to wrestle that bull.

i'd like to show the photos and video of the trip along with narrative in a story format. I pretty sure I can do it with Windows movie maker but it is so time consuming to figure it out I usually give up and start working on something else.

I got a bunch of different ride videos I'd like to make movies out of .

Did Bear close Boondock's cause of his health?

PODCAST ?? I ain't broke nothing lately.. and it isn't a 1st Gen part that I know of ??

Does sound like it could be good for repairs. But does this make more work or expense for Don???

After experimenting with skype, and some other software that I have on the Mac, I have now reached a point where I can take (or make) calls and record them for the podcast.

If anyone feels like being the first guest, I'd love to set up a time when we can do this. If you have skype, or are willing to download and install it, we can make a skype to skype call for free! (you'll need a computer headset) If you are willing to burn 10 to 20 minutes of airtime on your cell, we can do that too. Just let me know. I havent yet been able to test the conference calling feature, but that would be a great way to do one of these. Myself plus a couple guests...what a hoot.

Dont be scared yall! I know I have ruffled a few feathers..nows your chance to express your opinions live! ( more or less!)

And hey Don, dont think your gonna get out of this...I know you have some things happening right now, but maybe in a few weeks we can get a conference going with you and another moderator or two...could be fun!

And remember, I'm learning too!

Brian,

After I get done with the front end, I would be glad to give you an interview on the death wobble chase. Also, we could do something on the Texas Stampede. Heck, we can even do a debate on home engineering vs. purchasing of accessories. Choose an item such as the lights and run a comparison of what is involved both ways. Or maybe we could do something on adding electronics such as a GPS. What is involved in the 1st Gen. vs. the 2nd Gen.

I've been tweaking the adjustments on all the software, and i think i have it about right...got all the levels and audio quality about where i want it...

in order to do this, im running 2 pieces of software that have to talk to each other...but i'm getting it all figured out...hopefully!

Yes...now we just have to set up a time for this! Do you have skype?

Ok, I have the official call in number for the podcasts. Here it is:

806-486-1080

This is a skype number, so it rings directly into this computer, whenever I have the skype application running. If I'm offline then it should take you to the voicemail. This doesnt ring a normal home phone, so dont worry about disturbing anyone!

If you are running skype, then just enter 'tx2sturgis' in the calling window.

The software that I have now allows me to record the calls and then put them in a podcast.

Now...any takers?

Ok I downloaded Skype and ordered a headset what do I need to do next?

Bob, you should install skype, and once you have the headset, you can make free skype to skype calls, and if you do a lot of landline long distance talking to anyone, skype lets you do it pretty cheap. I'm not here to advertise for them, but I found it very easy to interface skype to the podcast recording software, Audacity and Audio Hijack Pro, and make it all work together. I upgraded the skype service to include long distance and an incoming number, which was posted earlier.

For anyone else whos wanting to try this, you can download skype for free, www.skype.com, and you can buy a cheap set of headphones at Wal-Mart or online...I bought the USB style, which costs a bit more, as it leaves my audio port open for other mics or mixers.

Now we just need to schedule a time, and I can have everything ready to go.

Ok folks...its time for me to start recruiting a few test subjects...I'm approaching launch time for the venture rider podcasts....

I'm wanting ride reports, interviews, technical info, and even personal stories, hopefully related to riding or motorcycling.

I have the ability now to record your calls, or you can send me something in written form, and I can read it on the 'air'...now dont be shy...if youve written a technical article, on the website or not, or maybe a ride report, or even bit of biker poetry, now is the time to get it out there!

You can send me a private message and we'll schedule a time for this, whenever its convenient for both of us.....

I can call you on the phone, or if you have skype, we can do it that way for free!
