igya Posted September 24, 2008 #1 Posted September 24, 2008 I've read the threads on sterios but not found an answer to my question. I don't have to tell you how bad the '85 Royale radio is (if you have one). I've decided to swap it out with a modern radio with a CD player. But, here's my question, are there any out there that will mount vertically without a lot of CD skip? I'm desperate for decent music!
Squidley Posted September 24, 2008 #2 Posted September 24, 2008 I haven't had to try that Igya, I know some have had them, but never really asked about a skipping issue. This is just me, so take it for what it's worth, but I would invest in a radio that has an auxillary port and hook an MP3 player or Sat radio (if you like that) into it and then you have music for days.

I took the oem stereo out of my 85 and replaced it with a kenwood unit and a marine mounting unit. its mounted with the cd sitting vertically and it works ok most of the time but it does skip when i hit a good sized bump or railway tracks etc. But , the unit i have has a usb input and a ipod input on the back of the unit so I bought a 8 gig flashdrive and just loaded it full of music and let it hang down into the empty space in the left fairing. its wat cheaper than an ipod and works just as well with no skipping like a cd. But I do hafta say there are a few things i miss about the oem unit like the uptop controls like channell and mute and I really miss the speed control volume a lot, so much in fact I think i am going back to my oem in springtime with a new amp installed. (the reason I swapped was my old amp was cutting out) Brian

You're right man, I can't believe I let the aux. port slip my mind. Who cares if the CD skips? THANKS for the reminder Squid.

I guess I'll be awake all night now thinking about how to set this up. Oh well.

The AM/FM button works only when it wants to, FM skips like poor reception, and it won't pick up many stations that I know are strong. I'm pretty sure my antenna is okay, otherwise, AM wouldn't come in very well. More solder joint? Piece of junk? Ignorant operator? I don't know.

Pull the controller apart & hit the switches, under the buttons with contact cleaner. As for the reception, try moving the coax cable at the antenna around a bit, that has improved mine a lot, in picking up FM stations (seek would previously continuesly loop & not find stations), no problem now.
MikeM8560 Posted September 25, 2008 #8 Posted September 25, 2008 (edited) I installed a sony marine unit and the cd skips i never use it though with having a ipod and XM satalite reciever built in. the newer sony marine units have built in inputs for i pods. to control it here is a write up i did on the install and pics MY stock stereo was giving me trouble. seemed after it got hot the left side would start crackling, poppint and cut out 1/2 way and all the way. I pulled it out and sent it off to Sierra in OH reluctantly just before Thunder by the Bay in Sarasotta so i missed the weekend event http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/icon_cry.gif but i looked forward to getting it back and ended my troubles. after i installed it i found out it still had the same trouble. They told me I could Ship it back and they would look into it some more. but i had already spent ovenight shipiing and ther repair fee i didnt fell great about paying to ship it again and wondering if it would be ok after installing it again. So i tole it all out again and bought a marine Sony system a cdx fm 50 sony cd player. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_158CDXR30M/Sony-CDX-R30M.html?tp=1721&tab=essential_info I bought it at West marine and wanted the sony RM X55 marine remote but they were out of stock and not due for a week or 2 so i found one at Crutchfield.com I removed the srstock reciever and power amp from the stock mountinf bracketttt and cut and reformed it to accept the Sony mouning piece. this i riveted on so the sony unint had room to slide into tit stillas a bolt would not have clearance for it to slide in. After a little trimming with a dremmel of the plastic dash pieces to reomve the excess plastic on the bottomside to make clearance with the new stereo it fit fine and i bought a black plastic storage box at walmart and cut it to fit into the square ressed section that the stock stereo display used to be. the remote works all the funtions of the sony and a satalite reciever can also be linked to it if i like. Im not planning on useng the cd player as ive got my I pod nano. the only thing is i dont have the noise mike like b4 to raise the volume gutted dash http://www.venturers.org/Forum/memberuploads/mvc_747s_126.jpg altered the stock mount http://www.venturers.org/Forum/memberuploads/mvc_748s_478.jpg New mount in place http://www.venturers.org/Forum/memberuploads/mvc_749s_138.jpg in the dash http://www.venturers.org/Forum/memberuploads/mvc_750s_135.jpg head installed http://www.venturers.org/Forum/memberuploads/mvc_755s_197.jpg\ sony remote controler on dash http://www.venturers.org/Forum/memberuploads/mvc_757s_223.jpg Then i went with Polk 105 peak watt 4" speakers and bass blockers http://www.crutchfield.com/S-b826CDSyffM/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=51200&tab=essential_info&i=107DB400 http://www.electricalconnection.com/audio/amp-accessories.htm http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/products/2005/107/h107DB400p.jpg Edited September 25, 2008 by MikeM8560

Okay, I knocked the antenna around pretty good and noticed the FM cutting out a bit. So, I snached the antenna off and replaced with a $13 one from Auto Zone and almost all my problems went away. So much for the fancy $50 antenna. The contact are next. Thanks a lot friend!!

Have to like the cheap fixes..... Remember to work the switches some, when doing this & should give them some "air dry time" before putting back together.
