Burninator Posted September 23, 2008 #1 Posted September 23, 2008 I would like to find some way to locate my trunk a couple of inches farther back. Then I will be able to leave my driver's back rest on when I take passengers who are not skinney. Can anyone suggest how to do this? Is there a relocation kit available?
nance56 Posted September 23, 2008 #2 Posted September 23, 2008 Muffinman had a post on how to do this. If you do a search or pm him I'm sure he'll help.
BradT Posted September 24, 2008 #3 Posted September 24, 2008 There was trunk re locating kit available years ago but these are not sold anymore, but occasionally they pop up. I think E-fishin-C used a couple pieces of a hockey stick that worked well. BRad

The Corbin passenger seat actually goes underneath the backrest almost to the trunk, and the space between the rider backrest and the passenger BR is only about 6 inches. I bought the Corbin off Ebay a couple years ago for the '93 project, but the '91 came along, and I think it was built for a long legged rider...which is good for me. All I know is that man it's comfortable. I just can't get anything in the passenger seat....
Guest daveor Posted September 24, 2008 #5 Posted September 24, 2008 I moved the truck back on my 87, If I remember right I bought a kit that had 4 Z shaped pieces of metal that moved the trunk up and back, and before you ask,, no I don't have any pix. would be something that would be easy to make though if you could find someone that had one already to take measurements from, DAve

For me UP screws up the lines. I want to go back without creating a big gap between the trunk and the saddle bags.
Bob Myers Posted September 24, 2008 #7 Posted September 24, 2008 (edited) The key word here is UP. For me UP screws up the lines. I want to go back without creating a big gap between the trunk and the saddle bags. I am presently acquiring an extra mount for the trunk to modify, moving back not up. The whole mount must be modified because of the offset rear bracket if going higher is not an option. I made some brackets that moved it back an inch but went up 3/4 inch. Didn't look too bad but like COndor I want the height to remain as was. If I can make this happen cheaply enough i could do an exchange and always have one to modify. part that is actually holding me up at this point is finding someone who will rechrome for less than the price of a new Royal Star. Maybe powder coating black would be acceptable for some? Edited September 24, 2008 by Bob Myers
Marcarl Posted September 25, 2008 #8 Posted September 25, 2008 I just used some stainless flat bar, about 2.5" by about 8". I thought I posted some pictures but can't find them now, so I'll repost them. It did raise the trunk a little, but I don't notice it, nobody has commented on it, it is more comfortable for the passenger, and it looks good.
BradT Posted September 25, 2008 #9 Posted September 25, 2008 If I remember right I bought a kit that had 4 Z shaped pieces of metal that moved the trunk up and back, Yes that is exactly what I saw as well. Brad
Guest Fly-N-Lo Posted September 25, 2008 #10 Posted September 25, 2008 My '90VR came with that "Z" kit installed. It did raise the trunk about 1 1/2" but the kit also came with a black lexan filler strip. You may be able to see it in the attached pic.
GigaWhiskey Posted September 25, 2008 #11 Posted September 25, 2008 Seeing marcarl's pics, the whole thing makes sense and does not look too difficult. I always thought it what the trunk that was relocated, not the rack it mounts to too. I was wondering how y'all trusted the plastic but it basically did not change. If that made sense.

For a MkI that's a great way to do it, but for a MkII there are more attach points and would be a plumbers nightmare. It's much better to make brackets that move the trunk back on the rack than to relocate the entire rack. Muffinman made up a set of brackets for his trunk, but they raise the trunk as well as move it rearward. For the MkI they may be the 'Z' brackets that everyone is refering to??
Bob Myers Posted September 25, 2008 #13 Posted September 25, 2008 I just used some stainless flat bar, about 2.5" by about 8". What I am attempting to do, if I can find a shop to do the rechrome is cut the offset tabs off the rear and make new ones that are extended about 1½ inches, and remove and reweld the side ones too. That would make it exactly the same height as stock. Adding a set of bars like yours will not work because there are parts that attach to the side too, like a rail, or bar, I forget exactly where it went but it was not going to make life easy moving the rack. I guess I could make the tabs from stainless and TiG weld with stainless filler, then rechroming would not be mandantory for rust prevention.
Big Daddy Posted September 25, 2008 #14 Posted September 25, 2008 Hi Christian! I have a set on my 83 I can measure up for you if you want. They dont look to difficult to fabricate. Let me know and I can take a picture or two also. Hope you are getting some rides in before the weather turns ugly.
