6m459 Posted September 23, 2008 #1 Posted September 23, 2008 Hi, Ok so I have my new red '84 Std Venture's dash apart, as some light bulbs needed changing. Surprisingly ALL the dash illumination lamps were blown. This seems odd but OK, lets see what happens with new ones. My limited experience with this bike has shown me that there is some erratic behaviour with the CMS indications, brake / oil indicators coming on spuriously & intermittently etc. I recall reading here about bad solder joints on the CMS commonly causing such things, so I brought the CMS to work with me this morning where I have a good BIG magnifying work light, appropriate solder and a proper size iron for the job. (and a bit of free time thankfully. ) Now, I have done electronic QC work in the past so I know what bad solder joints look like and how to reflow the solder etc. Under close inspection, I didn't see any obviously suspect joints on the lower CMS board. I went ahead anyways, and gingerly reheated & resoldered all the joints on the bottom pc board, concentrating on the ones associated with the wiring connectors. (I can't recall when I worked on a board that bubbled so much when heated though!) All look good and shinny and solid now. While I have this unit on the bench, is there any thing else I have over looked that good practice calls for to make it happy and reliable again? BTW, although I get CMS indications for oil and brake occasionally, I have yet to see the red flashing warning indicator work. Any clues here ? All thoughts and suggestions welcome. Thanks, Brian H. Venturous Randy Posted September 23, 2008 #2 Posted September 23, 2008 Your red flashing bulb should light up when an icon is showing. While you have the dash out, take the speedometer out and put some good grease down in the bottom inside where the cable comes thru around the bearing. RandyA
6m459 Posted September 23, 2008 Author #3 Posted September 23, 2008 Your red flashing bulb should light up when an icon is showing. Yes, that is how my other Venture works. Does anyone know if the red flashing warning light is an incandescent or an LED? The red light looks like an LED from the front of the dash but could it be another burned out bulb? (sorry don't have that part here with me.) speedometer grease I have some dark lithium grease, would that do? Otherwise I have a good silicone grease but it doesn't creep at all, doubt that would do. Suggestions on what type of grease ? Thanks, Brian H.
6m459 Posted September 24, 2008 Author #4 Posted September 24, 2008 (edited) One of the bikes 8 or so, P.O.'s had disabled it by disconnecting one of the wires to it at the plug from the CMS ! I re connected and all works as it should again. BTW, I still had some false alarms (oil & brake levels) indicated on the CMS when I re installed it. These seemed to go away once I changed out the blown bulb in the neutral light for a good one. I don't see the link but it was crap before and has been consistently good since. Any history on this ? Oh and one other thing. The bulbs in the dash that were blown, all seem to be numbered 158 but the closest resemblance to the bulb I could find at local supplier was numbered 194 so I have been using those. What am I letting myself in for? Cheers, Brian H. Edited September 24, 2008 by 6m459 .......and another thing!
