BJB Posted September 19, 2008 #1 Posted September 19, 2008 So awhile ago, I replaced my stator. I did not put any kind of sealant around the plug that the wires go through. I remember having a dickens of a time getting the wires through those plug holes! The wires are covered by some kind of woven material...but I managed. Now after returning from a 6 day trip, I find I get a few drops of oil, under the side stand. I removed the cover, and the wires coming out of the stator have a covering over them, rubber or vinyl or something of that sort. When I squeezed this covering, it was saturated with oil, and a lot came out. I am thinking that since it was full, it would continue dripping. Now that I have squeezed oil out, it will probably take awhile to saturate the covering again. Finally to the question....would it help to apply silicone or gasket seal material to the outside of the wires where they exit the stator? I probably will never get all the oil and grease off the outside of the wires and am not sure if this stuff would stick, or even do any good. Whats the concensus? Just put up with the drips once in awhile, or try and stop it? Sorry for long winded story. Thanks.

You are correct in your assumption that the oil on the wire covers and adjacent area will hinder the sealer from making a good bond. However, I would still give it a shot. I would clean the wires and area as good as I could with a solvent like carb cleaner and then try to force some around the wires and such. It sure couldn't make the problem any worse. Dick
MiCarl Posted September 19, 2008 #3 Posted September 19, 2008 BJB. I had a similar leak. In my case that grommet had apparently shrunk a bit and didn't completely fill the opening in the cover. When pressed in the flat end was a bit lower than the face of the cover. My oil was leaking between there and the engine. A bead of RTV on the end of the grommet sealed it up. If you've got the cover off you might want to have a look at that too.
91nwl Posted September 19, 2008 #4 Posted September 19, 2008 I tried that. Cleaned everything really well with lacquer thinner, let it dry, waited a week, applied a good silicone sealant, buttoned it back up. It worked for a while, but eventually the leak came back. I think my problem is that I could not get sealant on the oil source side, I could only get it on the oil exit side of the wires. Anyway, the mechanic at my local dealer had a 1st gen Venture for 16 years and says he can fix it so it will never leak again. This guy has never failed me yet. I may take it in soon and see if he can do it. It's probably gonna cost me a couple hundred bucks in labor. It really isn't a big problem and his advice is to let it leak, but I'm a freak for leaks.
GeorgeS Posted September 20, 2008 #5 Posted September 20, 2008 I got the leak on the left side, also, I finally gave up on it!! Nothin is perfect, as they say.
