loehring Posted September 17, 2008 #1 Posted September 17, 2008 Since I've just moved to the 2nd Gen crown I have a couple questions. With my 1st Gen I've always done all my work with the center stand. I don't have one with the 2nd Gen. Does it matter for things like oil changes that the bike is on the side stand or do I need to find a way to straighten it? Also, if I do need to straighten it what's the best/cheapest way to do that?
Tartan Terror Posted September 17, 2008 #2 Posted September 17, 2008 You can do everything like that on the side stand. Only thing that you will need to do is to check the oil level in the sight glass is stand it up. Usually I just get the Fiance to look in the window when I stand it up. I do have a center stand that I got from Freebird but honestly I have used it once and most likely will sell it as it is just a pain to take off when I want to use the Carbon One adapter and just lift the bike. If you want one I will sell this one to you. If you use the center stand on the first gen you will probably use it if you had one on the 2nd Gen but it isnt really nessessary.
pegscraper Posted September 17, 2008 #3 Posted September 17, 2008 The cheapest way is to have the wife hold the bike vertical while I pour oil into the engine and watch the sight glass. The easiest way is to use a jack to hold the bike vertical. The last bike I owned was an XS1100 which had a center stand. I do miss having one on my bike, but that's the way it is.
Squidley Posted September 17, 2008 #4 Posted September 17, 2008 Let me suggest that one of the 1st things you get is Carbon One's lift adapter http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php/product/69/cat/7 These are so handy to have it's not even funny, you can change the oil in the bike with it attached and if you do your own work it's a must to jack it high in the air. I wouldn't want to work on a G2 without one
Eck Posted September 17, 2008 #5 Posted September 17, 2008 You can place a 6 inch long piece of 2x4 under the kick stand and it will be good enough to change the oil and to check the oil level in the sight glass.... If you want to get it even closer to being level.. add a piece of 3/16th" plywood on top of the 2 x 4....
Ponch Posted September 17, 2008 #6 Posted September 17, 2008 I love my stand. I park it in the garage on the stand and it takes up less room. Makes Oil changes a breeze and since its always on the stand (at home), I can check my oil and tires easily before taking off. :2cents: Ponch
keithert Posted September 17, 2008 #7 Posted September 17, 2008 I forget who made it but I had a center stand on my 99. It was great for cleaning, storage and maintenance. It was also very easy to use. I'd recommend a center stand on an RSV.
Redneck Posted September 17, 2008 #8 Posted September 17, 2008 Its a second gen you won't need to work on it just ride.
2WHEELSFORME Posted September 17, 2008 #9 Posted September 17, 2008 I also see no need to look at the sight glass. Drain the old oil out on side stand, when it stops draining sit on bike and hold it upright for a minute or two then replug. Put in the 4 Qts. and a filter and go. Mine does not use any oil.
pegscraper Posted September 17, 2008 #10 Posted September 17, 2008 Four quarts, really? And you don't have any trouble with oil in the air filter? I get a little over three quarts in mine, just into the bottom of the sight glass, and if I put any more than that in, it makes a mess in the air filter housing. I sure couldn't put four full quarts in. Where does four quarts hit the sight glass on your bike?
dlhoulton Posted September 17, 2008 #11 Posted September 17, 2008 Not cheep but for 2nd Gen Rivco makes a bolt on center stand. Here is there web address, http://www.rivcoproducts.com/ .
BuddyRich Posted September 17, 2008 #12 Posted September 17, 2008 To check the oil I put a makeup mirror on the floor and sit on the bike and level it. Then I can see it easy
2WHEELSFORME Posted September 19, 2008 #13 Posted September 19, 2008 The book calls for 3.9 Qts. I use the long filter and put in 4 Qts. but don't let every drop of oil drain out of the bottles. I figure that is close enough to 3.9. I've got over 30K on the bike and just checked the filters last week and no problems with oil where is not supposed to be. I don't know for sure where it hits on the sight glass but I think just above the middle. Like I said I don't look at it too often and for sure can't look at it right now setting inside a crowded garage.
MAINEAC Posted September 19, 2008 #14 Posted September 19, 2008 To check the oil I put a makeup mirror on the floor and sit on the bike and level it. Then I can see it easy GOOD THINKING!!! So you can check your oil and do your mascara at the same time... what a time saver...
