Just got my bike back after its been in the shop for 4 weeks and two days.:depressed: I rode it to work and back for the past two days, approximately 120 miles. I parked it in the driveway when I got home and my wife and I took a walk around the yard. When we got back to the driveway, I was walking up to the bike to put it in the garage, and I noticed an oil spot under the bike. I looked under the bike and noticed oil leaking from the bottom of the shock.:mad::mad: Now, I had the bike serviced while the dealer had it and was just hoping it could be something venting that caused the oil leak. I've read bad stories about shocks going bad and leaking oil. I hope thats not the case. If it is I'm going ballistic on Yamaha. I have just about had it with this bike. If it is the shock, can I ride it till I get the time to take it to the dealer and get it replaced? Anyway, any advice if it is a shock, and what should I do with this bike. It has less than 5000 miles on it and I'm just about ready to get rid of it.

Thanks,

Glenn

I am sorry to hear that, I cant say as I blame you if I was in your shoes I would be very upset also. I dont know much about the shocks other than the little I have read here, I hope it being a new bike like mine is that that isnt the case. Maybe you should find another dealer to work on it if they are taking that long just a thought. I wish you the best of luck and hope it all works out. Kevin

If its from the shock its will be on the shock mounting bolt and the rubber boot on the bottom of the shock. It could be from one of the overflow tube next to the shock. Look up under at the bottom of the shock. If its dry then its not the shock.

but it would be from over filling the crankcase. More than half full (or half empty) in the site gauge would leak down the overfill tubes

Don't know how much of a leak you are seing but it's been my experience that if your oil level is on the high side after a long ride or even a short at good speed you could see a drop or two from the overflow.... Also it tends to accumulate on the bottom part of the sidestand while you are riding.

I doubt it is the shock, the key thing you said is you just had the dealer service it. My experience is is that dealers dont know squat about these bikes. If the oil sight glass has oil at the half way point or over it is too much oil in the crankcase, make sure it is a little under half way on the site glass or it will leak out the overflow hoses close to the rear shock. When my shock failed it had a pool of oil under it that looked like new oil even though my motor oil had quite a few miles on it. Yamaha would not do anything. They tried to make the same claim that people here are making. I stood the bike up and told the service writer to look at the level which was about half way. They admitted that but still wouldn't do anything. It wasn't very long before it would leak all the air out on a 1/2 hour ride. At that point they replaced the shock. It can be ridden without the oil. It was probably a couple of months or more on mine.

You didn't say why your bike was at the dealer's for four weeks and two days -- maybe I missed it in another post. With the possibility that oil spots that you saw are just the result of a over-filled crank case, I wonder whether you have a disappointing bike or just a disappointing dealership.

It was at the dealer to troubleshoot and repair the radio/comm system. They changed everything on the radio/comm system and couldn't fix the problem. They finally changed out the main wiring harness and it works fine. They were back and forth with Mother Yamaha the whole 4 weeks because I had taken it back to them 3 other times. Even had a factory rep out to look at it. It hadn't worked since the first week I've had it. Now it finally works. Now I think the shock is leaking oil. I'm not going to be able to get back to the dealer until the middle of October, and I'm going to ride it to work everyday until then.

Take it over let them look at the shock. if its bad let them order a new one, dont leave the bike there, when it comes in set an appt. to have it installed while you wait. Craig
