KeithR Posted September 11, 2008 #1 Posted September 11, 2008 I lost one of my seat hold down nuts awhile ago and figured if I replaced it with an original I would lose it again eventually. I picked up a couple of drawer pull knobs for .99 ea. They are all plastic and are not threaded. I just happen to have a 6mm tap so after drilling them(5mm or 13/64") I tapped the hole in the knob. It has been on there quite awhile. It makes removing the seat a breeze and are easy to check and give them a quick twist if needed. Keith
lonestarmedic Posted September 11, 2008 #3 Posted September 11, 2008 A really good idea. But, if you wanted to make them even easier to see and find I would make them out of "safety chrome" or possibly "high-vis polished stainless". :big-grin-emoticon: JB
GigaWhiskey Posted September 11, 2008 #4 Posted September 11, 2008 Are these the nuts I have heard about falling off of 2nd gens that will keep falling off if they are not put on with a torque wrench and getting it at the right torque?
lonestarmedic Posted September 11, 2008 #5 Posted September 11, 2008 No Giga- The nuts that need to be secured to prevent falling off are on the top side of the seat. JB
BradT Posted September 12, 2008 #6 Posted September 12, 2008 No Giga- The nuts that need to be secured to prevent falling off are on the top side of the seat. Nylon Nuts do not fall off. Pain to take off though. Brad
BOO Posted September 12, 2008 #7 Posted September 12, 2008 I just took my off and left them off. Seat ain't gonna fall off with my big butt on it. Jerry
MAINEAC Posted September 12, 2008 #8 Posted September 12, 2008 Who said you Newfies are goofy? Good job Keith!!! The only nuts on my seat are the ones on top of it...
GigaWhiskey Posted September 12, 2008 #9 Posted September 12, 2008 The only nuts on my seat are the ones on top of it... Whats that?
spear Posted September 12, 2008 #10 Posted September 12, 2008 No Giga- The nuts that need to be secured to prevent falling off are on the top side of the seat. JB Huh - typical 1st gen comment! :rasberry:yerself.
Eck Posted September 12, 2008 #11 Posted September 12, 2008 I just took my off and left them off. Seat ain't gonna fall off with my big butt on it. Yep, same here.......with my fat butt on it, it surely isnt going anywhere.. and if I crashed, do you think I would really care if the seat stayed on...
Moakster Posted September 13, 2008 #12 Posted September 13, 2008 6mm wing nuts with lock washers. Have had no issues with the wings coming off. Also does not show. Moakster
midnightventure Posted September 20, 2008 #13 Posted September 20, 2008 Good idea. The dealers especially can't seem to get them tight enough to stay on.
nightrider Posted September 24, 2008 #14 Posted September 24, 2008 Hi guys just signed up with your site. I have been riding my 02 nut free for many miles with no problem. Makes checking the battery much quicker.

I found the knobs at home hardware but when I got home I couldn't fine my tap bummer I thought but with the knobs being a hard plastic thought what the hay I'll just force them on after drilling out a bit bigger and of course the seat studs cut new threads just like the tap would have. So you really don't need the tap but I'm sure it would help .. just a thought here..
Guest Bar Posted November 14, 2008 #18 Posted November 14, 2008 Hey guys, I also lost one of my nuts (the ones under the seat:moon:) ha, ha, and have also tried the wing nuts, but both are still a pain in the arse to get off. Really, all you need is a tight fitting rubber (do I hear a chuckle:p) to place on over the bolts. That should keep it in place. That's what I will be doing in spring when I put my battery in. It will make removing the seat a breeze. Can't see why it wouldn't work? Cheers, from another Newf Bar @ Carbonear, and "how's she go'n by", to the other Newf in Grand Falls;)
Grey beard Posted November 15, 2008 #19 Posted November 15, 2008 I like that idea so much I went to Ace, bought a plastic know, AND a 6mm screw. Used the screw to act as a tap, and voile! I don't worry about the loss of a seat nut now. Thanks for the great idea.
86er Posted March 14, 2010 #20 Posted March 14, 2010 I just took my off and left them off. Seat ain't gonna fall off with my big butt on it. Yep, same here.......with my fat butt on it, it surely isnt going anywhere.. and if I crashed, do you think I would really care if the seat stayed on... Damn, Eck! Now I see where it all started!
BEER30 Posted March 14, 2010 #21 Posted March 14, 2010 Damn, Eck! Now I see where it all started! I thought he was the NUT that held down the seat ?
Uturn Posted September 2, 2010 #22 Posted September 2, 2010 Before I got my "Butler Nuts", I used a thin piece of vacuum hose for a washer and put a 6mm wing nut from Home Depot on my seat. Tighten it down hard to compress the rubber washer, it never loosen up. Rick takes nylon nuts and epoxys them into a thumb nut wheel. Works good. MIKE aka Uturn
Big-bird Posted September 4, 2010 #23 Posted September 4, 2010 After loosing my 3rd set about 60000 miles ago, I just left them off. My philosophy may not be right, but my 270 lbs has done a good job of holding the seat down for the past 60+k. However it did make it a lot easier to get to fuse for my gerbings on the side of I-65 one cold rainy night last January. I was shaking so hard I don't think I could have got the stupid little nuts off, much less back on.
Trader Posted September 4, 2010 #24 Posted September 4, 2010 I guess as long as nobody is trailering the bike not having nuts holding them on won't matter....will it Wrongway??? but that's a different thread!
DanC Posted December 2, 2010 #25 Posted December 2, 2010 I had the same problem with the seat bolts coming off. I noticed the seat loose and upon inspection found that one was gone and another loose. Ordered the bolts from Yamaha and installed with lock tight. No problem since. 2008 Venture DanC
