I found this tip on the Venturers site...ordered the caps from Reidsupply and aquired the bolts from local Sears hardware...works great!! Inexspensive alternative to more exspensive mod seen on e-bay and other sites...

You can easily make your own quick removal bolt set for your saddlebags. No tools needed to remove the bags for service or cleaning.

Parts needed for 1-bike are 6 ea. M6X36 and 2 ea. M6X55 socket head cap screws with 1.0 thread pitch.

The t-cap heads can be ordered from Reidsupply.com and the item number is SLK-1200.

If you want to see the screws the item # are brb-532086p and brb-532094p and there is a limit of 100 each on the bolts, but not on the plastic T-heads. I was able to find my cap screws locally and I didn't have to buy more then I needed. Check with your local hardware store, Lowe's or Home Depot. Just press the T-Caps onto the bolt heads in a vice or small press. I used a drill press to push them in. Also thanks go to Gunny (Butch) for his help to me......Ken

I used a large C-clamp to press the caps on the bolts...works well...I hope that this helps someone!:missingtooth:

I have made sets of the bag releases before, all depends on how you want to go. I have a set that I recieved off one of our members here that sells on ebay. It is Hilliss and here is an auction that has past already, but he makes them for the RSV and I like the quality of his work.

Once you start adding your time and running around and getting all the items together, it's just as easy to purchase a set off him and just pop them in :2cents:

The caps fit onto socket head bolts and our RSV are rounded...the total cost for me was about twelve dollars and took about 5 min to put the caps on.:dancefool:

Good idea!!! Yah... I had forgotten about those buttonheads.......must be getting old????:scratchchin:

Yeah Brian,

I did basically what you found several years ago but at the time there were several others of us who had come up with a similar solution, so I let it go. But I used stainless allen bolts and started out with smaller knurled knobs, but recently started using larger rosette knobs to get a better grip on. In fact I sent Allen Hall (DiamondR) a set suggesting that maybe this would be a product that he might want to start building and selling. He wasn't really convinced that something like this would work and be durable to last. But, now I can take my bags off with my fingers without any tools.

In fact Dave Henderson and I started using these knobs (With Tri-Star Industries) when we build seat bolt knobs for the 1st gen Ventures and they worked great. In fact I know of some of these seat bolts that are over 15 years old and still working.

Anyway sometimes you can find these knobs at some of the hardware stores that carry a full line of nuts and bolts. And you can really put them together with a bench vise. I've attached a couple of pictures showing them in action.

Maybe we need to start a petition to let Allen know that this is a product that we would like to see him carry? He could find a vendor where he could buy the components in larger quantities and really bring the cost down from what we can build them for ourselves in a single set quantity.

Has anyone developed a set of handles to attach to the lids of RSV bags so that once you get them off the bike in a quick hurry...using your "quick release bolts"....you can then pick them up by the handles and carry your "suitcases" in to the motel with you?

That would sure beat the heck out of unpacking in the parking lot and juggling your toothbrush, pyjamas, Jim Beam and sneakers across the tarmac. I know you can buy bag "inserts", but why mess around with two layers when you could just take the whole thing inside.

Or is this a crappy idea?

Mike,

It could probably be done, but you would still have to go inside the bags to remove the items from around the fasteners. It would be double hard if you had the saddlebag rails to come up with a sliding mechanism like the 1200 1st gens had. I have the bags and like them well enough, but there might be some that will brainstorm an idea like you talk about :confused24:

Then you wont breakup your hard bags and they wiegh alot less.
