Hi , I'm trying to shorten and add a right angle connect to an exiting 3.5 stereo audio cable. The cable has a yellow and white wire wrapped in copper wire. I believe the copper is for shielding (please correct me if I'm wrong). Does it matter which post yellow or white goes to.

I've made up a connector with the white going to the left post and yellow going right, I've got continuity between the top pin to top pin of each connector and again continuity from middle section to middle section of each pin. I seem to be getting stereo sound from left and right speakers. My problem is there is a continuous whine in the background with or with out music playing that is not there if I use a unmodified cable.

I thought maybe some of the shielding copper wire strands was touching one or both posts so I cleaned them up. But the whine is still there. What am I missing??????

There you go taking me out of context again. It's a good thing the whine in the back didn't read this or you would have some dodging to do come Oct :whistling::whistling:

I was thinking the Dry Splines in the rear wheel.

Were you refering to a person ? Thought your wife was your only passenger  I am sure Marion (spelling sorry) knows I would never say anything that was not nice about her.

I got lost in your description.... sorry....

You should have contunituy between each pin, but not between any other.

Tip to tip

Middle to middle

base to base

BUT NOT tip to middle, tip to base or middle to base.

If you are getting a hum it might also be a ground loop. If this is the FIRST time you are hooking up this piece of elctronics to your bike, try operating the accessory on it's internal battery with out it's housing attched to the bike.

If you are trying to make up a cable to hook up a MP3 player, etc, to your bikes stereo, I took the easy route and went to Radio Shack and purchased a cable with a 90 degree plug on one end already.

I took up the excess cable in the fairing.

I can't find it in their online catalog, but it was in my local store.

I found one online at THIS web site, but shipping for one part would be bad....

hi Stephen

what connextor is on the other end?

do you have a voltmeter?

i have a few electronic stores close to me, one is my favorite and they sell different length patch cords with a variety of ends.

i have a 3.5 90 degree i think it is 3 foot and has 2 RCA phono type jacks on the other end.

Are you going to Hagens bike night this week/thursday night?

cheers, Scott

Hey Scott, If the weather is favorable I would love to get over to Hagen's. I haven't had a chance to get over there all summer.

I cut off the male 3.5 mm gold straight connector and trying to replace it with a silver right angle 3.5mm connector but I'm getting a background whine that only happens when I use my modified cable. My knowledge of electronics is limited at best.:bang head:

The copper shielding wire is probably also the ground. If it's not hooked up it needs to be.

Thanks, as it turns out that was exactly the problem. Did not hook up the ground (copper shielding). Works great now.
