halfwitt Posted September 10, 2008 #1 Posted September 10, 2008 Well, my lovely bride and I took yesterday off to spend a day on the bike (affectionately known as Betty). We did about 250 miles up PA 74, over Blue Mountain to Shade Mountain Winery near Selinsgrove. BEAUTIFUL ride! PA 74 over the mountain has a lot of switch backs and a fantastic view at the top. Great wine at Shade Mountain (we liked the Great White best). This would be a great ride for PA Venturers. Anyway, we got home and I told Brenda we did about 250 miles. She said, "then I think my butts limit is about 245 miles." We spent most of 8 hours on the bike so I think she did OK. Her test is in two weeks when on Saturday we will do about 75 miles on the PA ride. Then the next day its 200 miles to Seneca Rocks followed by 200 miles back the next day. I hope her sitter can do 500 miles over three days! PA VentureRiders - we need to do a similar ride over Blue Mountain in the spring!
mini-muffin Posted September 10, 2008 #2 Posted September 10, 2008 You might want to get her a cushion. This way she can swap out between sitting on that and the seat itself. Might make the trip a bit easier on her backside. Just a thought. Margaret
halfwitt Posted September 10, 2008 Author #3 Posted September 10, 2008 She says, "that may be a good idea! Thanks MM!"
mini-muffin Posted September 10, 2008 #4 Posted September 10, 2008 Thought it might help. I use one on long trips it switches off on the pressure points makes them long trips easier to handle. Glad to be some help. Margaret
cecdoo Posted September 10, 2008 #5 Posted September 10, 2008 Hey, I have a nice gel pad, she can try, to see if it helps her, before you run out and buy something. Let me know. Craig
SilvrT Posted September 10, 2008 #6 Posted September 10, 2008 The more she rides, the more adapted her butt will become (or maybe it's her mind)...eventually she won't realize it's numb (her butt) and think all is well!
Marcarl Posted September 10, 2008 #7 Posted September 10, 2008 I think it's best to rub the butt for some time before the ride(s), say the evening before, during and after. Be sure to use some deep rub gel or oil and to rub in a continuous circil motion. I think with that type of treatment, she will not be complaining as much and you might even get to enjoy it some after getting used to it. Don't take this to be gospel truth or anything like that, but if it works for you, let us know.

bongobobny Posted September 10, 2008 #9 Posted September 10, 2008 Ditto!! Although it sounds like it may be fun...

Sleeperhawks Mechanic Posted September 10, 2008 #11 Posted September 10, 2008 I believe the more Brenda rides, the more she will become familiar with the various ways to sit, including with a pillow beneath her and behind her back too. I found a small rectangular pillow that I can bend in half and put behind Sleeperhawk's back (he doesn't have a backrest) and that helps his back out. I can sit on it and also put it behind my back! Brenda can also stretch out her legs and put them on your legs. Sleeperhawk will pick up my legs and put them on top of his and that helps stretching out as well! She just will need to watch traffic carefully in anticipation of you having to use brakes or the clutch so she can put them back down. We are heading to Arizona two weeks from Friday on the bike for a two week vacation, going up into Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas and back to South Carolina. Sleeperhawk informed me that the round trip will be around 6,000 miles so we shall see how adapted my butt has become! We put 60,000 miles on the 05 before we traded Pony Number One for Pony Number Two! Tell Brenda she is doing great! Ride safe, Bobbie
Moped Posted September 10, 2008 #12 Posted September 10, 2008 Sleeperhawk's mechanic, not to change thread, but to include driver comfort it's interesting that with all the riding you do you mention that you don't have a driver backrest and going on a six thousand trip. To me it is one of the best items to add, short of additional front and rear lights. Funny thing is I would never bought a backrest because of price so wife bought me one year's ago for Christmas. Now would never ride without. Just my opinion. Have a safe and fun trip.
halfwitt Posted September 10, 2008 Author #13 Posted September 10, 2008 How is the passenger comfort affected by a driver's backrest?
Moped Posted September 10, 2008 #14 Posted September 10, 2008 My wife is 5' 9" and it is not in her way if that is what you mean. There is a little plus in that it has a bag attached to it where I keep riding glasses etc. and she can just reach down and exchange glasses ect. while on the road. Handy.

Since he put the flanger(?) bars on the bike which he really likes, by the way, he prefers to lean back into me when he needs a break! So I guess I am the cheap backrest when he needs it and I don't mind it a bit!!!
Moped Posted September 10, 2008 #16 Posted September 10, 2008 Hey, can't argue with that backrest. With that backrest I might just eliminate the bars, period.
Eugene Posted September 10, 2008 #17 Posted September 10, 2008 OKAY - enuff already - where are the moderators???? Rubbing oils on butts, lovely ladies as backrests - I can't take it anymore!!!
mini-muffin Posted September 10, 2008 #18 Posted September 10, 2008 It's ok Eugene just take a cold shower, you'll be fine. :rotf: Margaret
Redneck Posted September 10, 2008 #19 Posted September 10, 2008 Change is the key try a folded hand towel you will be surprised how much difference it makes. change between pads towels ect at every stop and it will make her ride much better.
halfwitt Posted September 10, 2008 Author #20 Posted September 10, 2008 Mrs. 1/2 appreciates ALL the helpful hints!!
Eugene Posted September 11, 2008 #21 Posted September 11, 2008 It's ok Eugene just take a cold shower, you'll be fine. :rotf: Margaret I seem to be taking too many cold showers with this group, Mini -
